Incidentally, I believe (well, actually I know) that the Sound Blaster
AWE64 Gold includes a S/PDIF connector for digital input. What facilities
it has to manipulate this input I do not know, but more details can be got
from http://www.creaf.com/sound/64-gold/ . On a side issue, I see that on
the Specification page it states that the card is 'Year 2000 Compliant'.
Great! Now we can listen to sound AFTER the Year 2000 as well as before
(like we couldn't with any other sound card!)

I actually read about PA in the third volume of Clive's autobiography "May
Week Was In June", which covered his Cambridge years. As a fan of Clive's
books, I was looking on the web for any info, and there was some sort of
link to the PA site, I can't remember what or where.

Another one of his books, "The Dreaming Swimmer", included a copy of the
sleeve notes from a retrospective album release in 1991. I notice this
article is also included on the cover of the current double re-release.

Apart from the entertainment value of a lot of Clive's writing, I am
indebted to him for giving me some insight into the sort of serious
literature which I have always admired in theory, but not had the
inclination (or intelligence) to read myself.

Having had the benefit of the distilled wisdom made possible by Clive's
study of some of the great writers, I am even inspired to tackle a few
heavier books myself. I just don't think I will be able to learn Russian to
      do it.

Follow the album title link to a descriptor page, which then links
to a comments page where you can wax lyrical about the CD !
I put in a plug for the web site and the mailing list. Let's stuff that
      ballot box, folks.

I went to the web-site and admired the chart position. I also left a
message asking when there would be more Pete Atkin CDs available. I
received an email from Magpie this morning saying they hope to have more
      soon.

Can we believe this? Is anything in the works yet?

My mistake, I was actually talking about The Faded Manson on the Hill. I
was under the impression that someone had said it was nine straight verses
and, having thought about the song for weeks, put fingers to keyboard in
haste. It helps to know which song someone is on about!

Subject: MV699: Beautiful Changes on CD

Like any other right-thinking person, I'd obviously welcome a CD version
of 'The Beautiful Changes' from any legitimate source (so if anyone
produces one, count me in). However, I'm a little surprised by the
assumption that a commercial release wouldn't be feasible. Given the
chart-busting success (?) of the See for Miles re-release of the first
two PA albums, I'd have thought that a Julie Covington re-release would
do at least as well. After all, to the world at large, JC is still a
more familiar name than Pete, thanks to Rock Follies, Evita, et al. If
copyright tangles permitted, one option would be to release TBC as a
double CD with Julie's 2nd (AKA her 1st...) album on Virgin - which,
despite its lamentable lack of Atkin/James songs, is an excellent
record, with an eclectic selection of songs and superb production/
arrangements by Richard Thompson, the world's finest guitarist and
second best songwriter. I'd buy it, anyway.

      Hello Folks

Yes, it was great to see that the PA/CJ CD has achieved, quite rightly,
the number one spot in the Magpie chart.

However, I was un peut miffed when I revisited the sight today to see that
the comments which I and a number of other voices had left, had been
removed (although they do reserve the right to do this). In fact, Dave
Jones' is the only one remaining!!

As advised by various MVs I visited Magpie's site and was delighted to see
Pete up there at number one in the charts. I couldn't find a comments box,
so I emailed my comments to them. Putting in a plea for a reissue of Road of
Silk, the most sublime of all records.
By the way, thank-you Steve for the CDs, they were wonderful. I haven't had
much chance to watch the video yet - moving house and working don't go
together! - but I hope to be equally impressed.
      All the best,

"One extremely peripheral PS to the OOHTNTB influences: one of the train
blues rolling around my brain at the time was a particularly wonderful
piano track recorded in the 60s by Luckey (sic) Roberts, from an album he
shared with Willie The Lion Smith - Railroad Blues. It's on CD and
massively enjoyable and unpredictable piano playing - not at all
conventional boogie-woogie from either of them (they each play solo,
separately). LR was cited by Duke Ellington as one of his most important
      influences - INFLUENCES! - for heaven's sake."
