Looks like Julie Covington ... Plus has come back into stock. Available on Amazon for the bargain price of £6.98 delivered. This was the second album released by Julie Covington and was re-released several years ago. It disappeared from shops a couple of years ago and was only available 2nd hand at silly prices. So, if you want a copy don't delay!!

Not Julie's "The Beautiful Changes ...plus" that we already know and love, but looks interesting.

Thanks to Cary for highlighting this. I bought this album on vinyl when it first came out and, though it's not 'The Beautiful Changes' (and inexplicably features not a single Atkin/James number), it's a fine record. As well as the always wonderful Covington vocals, it was produced by Joe Boyd and John Wood, and features a lot of Richard Thompson's guitar, which is always a good thing. Terrific selection of songs, too, despite the omission of Messrs A & J - Sandy Denny, John Lennon, Anna McGarrigle, Tom T Hall, Thompson himself, and a great version of Kate Bush's 'The Kick Inside'. This was the album that Virgin thought would make JC a star, but she clearly had different ideas. In my excitement at finally getting hold of 'The Beautiful Changes' on CD, I somehow managed not to get around to buying the CD re-issue of this, and then, as Cary said, saw it at ridiculous prices (it's still showing on Amazon Marketing place for over £100...). So, wherever they've found these copies, I'm over the moon to pick it up for £6.98. And Amazon assure me it's been dispatched, so here's hoping...

I think Virgin thought, with pretty good reason, that she already was a star. I seem to remember, around the time when See For Miles were negotiating with EMI for the rights to reissue TBC, that it emerged that the rights in this album had reverted to Julie herself, and I see on this new reissue that there's a credit saying "original sound recordings courtesy of Julie Covington" which seems to confirm that. I'm not familiar with Pucka records, but in any case I'd advise anyone who's at all interested not to delay in getting hold of a copy, regardless of the lack of any James and/or Atkin involvement. (The replacements are pretty classy, it has to be said.)

| This was also on the SFM re-issues. Was there any reason Pete why no PA/CJ compositions made it to this album?

| Yes, Pete's quite right, of course. I should probably have said 'megastar'. And even now I'm struggling to think of anyone who could match her combined qualities as an actress and a singer. And I thoroughly recommend the record. I listened to it again last night for the first time in years, and, on top of the obvious attractions of JC's voice, it's a wonderful collection of songs and arrangements.

| I hesitate to speak for Julie with a hesitation that is hesitant almost to the point of stasis, but it had been six or seven years since TBC and Julie had in the mean time been doing quite a lot of other very successful things, and I think she simply felt she was moving on and that to renew the connection with Clive and me would have been a bit backward-looking. Besides, we hadn't written any new girls' songs for ages, and my own recording career was in the first stages of limbo by then. In any case, we had never been any kind of a team - it was always just circumstances and convenience that brought us all together - and there was no necessary working connection. We were still chums, but that was it. Julie asked me to the launch party for this album, for instance, which I seem to remember was in Richard Branson's flat somewhere in west London.

I wonder which singer/band Pete and Clive would be most thrilled to get a call from asking them to write an album of songs for him/her/them? Ian C

| Well I have no hesitation in saying thank you for your informative reply. And you can read about that very party here http://www.thebeautifulchanges.co.uk/nme_.htm

Thanks for that link, Cary. I suppose I must have read that piece before, but I had completely forgotten it. It incidentally reminded me of something else I'd forgotten, namely that the party in Branson's flat was to celebrate her signing to Virgin, not for the release of the album. Going back a post or two, the recordings credit on the SFM reissue was to EMI, as the owners of the recordings, rather than to Julie herself, as on the new Pucka reissue of the Virgin album. And, Ian, quite apart from its sheer unlikelihood, such a request, whoever it came from, would most likely be perplexing and even terrifying. Clive and I have little or no track record of writing to commission. I've done a bit of it on my own, of course, but not primarily for recording purposes. I suppose, though, that if anyone I or we admired even vaguely were to ask us for a new song (let's keep the scale of the request realistic) we would want to deliver if we possibly could. The very fact of the request itself would probably far outweigh in excitement any consideration of the person making the request.

| Just a note of clarification here lest purposes become crossed. Both albums were reissued on CD by SFM: TBC+ (the Atkin album) was SEECD 687 (1999), "Original sound recordings made by Columbia, courtesy of EMI Special Markets Ltd." JC+ (the Virgin album) was SEECD 718 (2000), and states "Original sound recordings courtesy of Julie Covington". I think this is unchanged on the Pucka release. Does the Pucka CD still carry the David Sandison booklet note, or is there a new one?

Aha! Sorry. My confusion. I had completely forgotten that SFM had put out the Virgin album. That must have been when SFM/Julie discovered that the rights had reverted to her, probably as a result of its having been out of print for a specified number of years. (No such clause in any of my contracts, unfortunately.) And, yes, the Pucka release includes David Sandison's note.

| Just had my first listen to this CD. I'm impressed with the production, Julie's clear singing voice, the variety of the material, Richard Thompson's magisterial guitar work, and, well, just about everything else. For chanson fans, the version of "Barbara's Song" from The Threepenny Opera is not to be missed.
