Re: VAL DOONICAN FOR PA COVERS ALBUM

Oh dear, following on from Ian Chippett's inspired idea for a PA Top Ten, the
delicious daily e-mail avalanche has dried to a trickle again.

One of the comments I found most perplexing in all of the above was the
MV who took a chunk out of poor old Val Doonican. In fairness (or should that
be fair-isle?) to VD, he was the only mainstream artist (OK, so I'm a bit fast
and loose in my use of the word mainstream) who covered a PA/CJ song. And as
CJ says, his version of FATW probably earned the tuneful twosome more in
royalties than any of the albums ever did. So let's give VD a big Midnight
Voices "Good Guy" badge. Maybe you could coax him out of retirement to do a
      support spot at the BOH?

VD's sterling support of PA/CJ and the recent trend for covers/tribute
albums set me thinking about which artist would be best suited to which
PA song. Just to set the ball rolling, here are two thoughts:

Between Us There Is Nothing – Tom Waits (in his more melodic,
pre-SwordfishTrombones incarnation). I think he'd also do terrific justice to
      "Thirty Year Man".

Perfect Moment – John Martyn after a bloody big spliff.

If you're sufficiently desperate for something to do, you could also think of
an alternate reality PA covers album in which someone totally inappropiate
covers a song – e.g. the aforementioned VD doing "Rain Wheels".

Anyone out there got any better ideas? As for an ideal PA/CJ
intro song, how about "The Girl With The Pearl Driller's Hands"?

Good idea - I think this is the best suggestion so far (probably because
it was chosen to kickoff the purple compilation). It's short, catchy
with an unusual tune and the lyrics are haunting (fancy going off with a
girl just because she had steady hands!)

I have been collecting records for 42 years. Sometimes, despite the hundreds
of hours and thousands of tracks sitting on the shelves, I put on a new record
which is instantly recognisable as an essential addition. The Monyash CD is
one of those. Pete's interpretation of those familiar songs is both faithful
and enhancing. The spirit of the originals shines through as nuances in some
of the lyrics suddenly strike sparks in the mind. And I agree with Ian -
'History and Geography' is up there with the best. The words looked
pretentious but the subtle simple setting communicates the feelings of regret
beautifully. Thanks, Steve - for this alone it's all been worth it.
I remember hearing Julie's 'The Magic Wasn't There' a couple of times on
Radio 1. Then late one night on BBC2 I remember seeing her- was it extracts
from the current Cambridge Footlights ? There was a rotund bespectacled
character with receding hair at the piano -a most mature student who seemed to
claim authorship. Julie's performance was wonderful - but I never bought the
single - the beer money was low that weekend. It's worth a tenner now - but
then her first album 'The Beautiful Changes' is changing hands for over £100 -
and worth every penny. Where's the CD of that one ?

      Best wishes,

      Barry Holley.

How about a Top 6 albums? The All-TimeTop Fifty Songs should be finished soon

of course plus the knowledge that someone is listening.) 8-)).

O.K. I'll start. I've ruled out the Monyash ones as they've never been on
general release and the various compilations .

      1. A King At Nightfall
      2. Secret Drinker
      3. Road Of Silk
      4. Beware Of The Beautiful Stranger
      5. Driving Through Mythical America
      6. Live Libel

This is more difficult than the Top 10 because I like 'em all. AKAN is the
Number One because I heard it first and it's the most consistent. ROS has the
best slow songs but is what the French call a "montagne russe" so I put it
after SD which is more consistent but a bit under-produced like BOTBS. DTMA
has some great songs (they all do!) but is not quite so immediate as its
predecessor while LL has to be last despite the presence of Black Funk Rex
      which is a masterpiece.

When I saw Pete last all those years ago in Bristol, his final encore was
Touch has a Memory, not the wildest of uptempo rockers, so he might easily
open at Buxton with Wall of Death or Our Lady Lowness. 8-)

      The top 6 strikes me as being a tad esoteric - i.e. arrange 6 of Pete's 7
albums in your favourite order. What next? Arrange Pete's chord sequences in
descending order of interest? (By the way, mine is the Bflat/Bdim/C sequence
in 'The Road of Silk', but I digress.)
However, in the spirit of positivity, I'd be really interested in other
voices' Top 5 Albums of All Time.
Seeing as we all have PA as one of our favourite artistes, to know the albums
that turn us on might lead to some fascinating discoveries.
I'm just going to sift through my record collection one more time, then I'll
      be back...

      Subject: MV1045: RealAudio .... Update

I must apologise twice over to those who've attempted to access the latest
music clips, those served directly from the www.rwt.co.uk site.

Firstly, Dave Jones has pointed out a serious difficulty with the .ra files
he's downloaded, rather than played on line. They don't play! This I've
traced to the file settings used in the /real directory for pnm://
streaming. Downloading via a browser (even using <shift-click>) results in
carriage returns being added to the file, it becomes about 1% longer and of
course is no longer a valid RealMedia file. Downloading via binary ftp
overcomes this. I regret not having tested this fully before announcing it
      to you.

So as a temporary fix (I should find a better way) I've made available
duplicate copies the eleven affected files in an ftp directory. Either:

      (a) Use your anonymous ftp client, go to ftp://ftp.rwt.co.uk/pub/rwt/ra/
and download the file(s) of your choice (the complete addresses are:
      ftp://ftp.rwt.co.uk/pub/rwt/ra/architec.ra
      ftp://ftp.rwt.co.uk/pub/rwt/ra/amanwhoz.ra
      ftp://ftp.rwt.co.uk/pub/rwt/ra/icecream.ra
      ftp://ftp.rwt.co.uk/pub/rwt/ra/joestead.ra
      ftp://ftp.rwt.co.uk/pub/rwt/ra/magic.ra
      ftp://ftp.rwt.co.uk/pub/rwt/ra/perfsax.ra
      ftp://ftp.rwt.co.uk/pub/rwt/ra/segue.ra
      ftp://ftp.rwt.co.uk/pub/rwt/ra/sessman3.ra
      ftp://ftp.rwt.co.uk/pub/rwt/ra/sunwas.ra
      ftp://ftp.rwt.co.uk/pub/rwt/ra/winter.ra
      ftp://ftp.rwt.co.uk/pub/rwt/ra/wouldnt.ra), or

      (b) Point your Web browser to ftp://ftp.rwt.co.uk/pub/rwt/ra/ and
<shift-click> the appropriate filename to save direct to disk. If you
simply click the name it will download to a temporary file, launch the Real
Player and start playing. But you can still save it from here. Just stop
playback, reset to the beginning of the piece, hit the red 'record' button
and play again, selecting a location to store the file. The default
filename will be the entry in the file's title box, but you can change this
to the DOS-compatible names above if you wish.

Second apology: In investigating this I discovered the RealServer at
Digiserve (who host the RWT pages) had again gone belly-up, so the clips
will have been unplayable for a few days. So it's not your fault after all!
Hear them now, (while it lasts?) at:
