Please can any body recommend a couple of reasonable London, Home Counties or Bristol records shops? I spent a week on London in November and found none that were interesting both Dobles and James Ashman seem long gone. Have they all fallen victim to the Internet ?

Hi Anton,
I'm afraid I can't help with record shops but mention of Dobells brought back a few memories. The Charing Cross Road Folk and Jazz shop closed in 1981 before the internet could have any influence on music sales. I was browsing in the folk bit one day when I came across and bought Beware of the beautiful stranger, then went back later for Driving through mythical America. It hadn't occurred to me before that the bloke I saw on TV might be making records!

Can't help re London but there's a wonderful place called Hillside Records in Bristol which has a relatively small but fabulous range of modestly-priced recordings. I don't know the address offhand but the sales staff is both informative and keen to help.

Well if second-hand is okay then... I have to declare an interest (the owner Mark is a friend of mine)... but still a must-visit if you are anywhere near is Flashback in Essex Road Islington   www.flashback.co.uk
Fab selection of secondhand cds (and vinyl downstairs) - great prices - he has opened a second one in Crouch End - happily proving second hand record shops are not all dead - hey he's not paying me for saying any of this!
