Simon,
I am unable to get mail delivered to you so I am posting this new information here for you, in the hope it proves to be of interest.

The Bureau album has at long last been issued in the UK, I bought my copy at the band's gig at the Borderline in London Saturday Feb 26th. Archie said some very touching things about the case before they played Let Him Have It.

It will be available in the high street record shops now and for information, go to
http://www.bureau.org.uk

Also note that the same song Let Him Have It was recorded by (the composer) Archie Brown's other band (other than The Bureau, I mean), in a softer and more melancholy fashion, retitled Bentley.
It appears on the album Bring Me The Head of Jerry Garcia by Archie Brown and The Young Bucks and is available through www.archiebrown.com

I watched the 1991 movie with my family two weeks ago and we all cried like babies.

best wishes
peter

Just jumping in feet first here to say that my other favourite songwriter, Ralph McTell, also has a song on this subject - appropriately enough, since he comes from Croydon.  It's called simply "Bentley and Craig," and can be found on his "Water of Dreams" album.

Richard,
Simon had already caught the Ralph McTell song but thank you in any case.

June Tabor's 1997 cd Aleyn also features a version of Bentley and Craig.

In reply to my own posting, I see the sleeve notes on June Tabor's cd give an honorable mention to Wizz Jones, "on whose performance of the song this version is based".

Ah, now you're talking!  June Tabor - what an artist, what a voice!  She sends shivers up and down my spine.

June Tabor! Magic. She was a librarian in the Modern Languages Library in Oxford in my student days, and used to sing at the Heritage folk club in Jericho. Anyone remember her in the Oxford band, Mistral? What a voice.

Many MVs will already know that the song Bentley and Craig is also featured on an album by Ralph's fellow Croydonian Wizz Jones Through The Fingers.  Wink

Goodness, a thread about me and it takes me a week to notice!

Peter, thanks for the info.  Someone else managed to get an email to me about this new album, and I have tried to contact Archie himself about it (no response so far, but my email is behaving oddly).

I've got copies of Wizz's and June's versions of  "Bentley and Craig", but I'm still missing Ralph's - anyone know which album it's on?

I'll update derekbentley.com with this new info as soon as my ISP gets their ftp access working again.  (No emails and broken ftp for several days? - time to change ISPs, maybe...).

Thanks again,
Simon

Simon (my sound main-man),

If you check back on this thread to my first posting you will see that Ralph McTell's version is on "Water of Dreams" - or visit ralphmctell.co.uk and check it out for yourself.

BTW, when I saw Ralph at the QEH about 18 months ago he performed the song.

Richard,

You can't expect me to *read* the posts if I'm starring in them too!  ;-)

I've ordered Water of Dreams from Ralph's site (I'd rather pay the extra quid to buy from Ralph than fill Amazon's coffers more than I have to).
