A young mate of mine is releasing his first album on the 25th of September. He's a French jazz saxophonist called Baptiste Herbin and the album (on the Harmonia Mundi label) is called "Brother Stoon." The slight but considerable PA link is that a few years ago at an outdoor music festival in my village he and his equally brilliant brother Bastien on piano accompanied me on "Touch Has A Memory." I'd chosen to play this in the hope that it would be recorded (it wasn't) as I wanted to do a bluesy, jazz version for your instruction if not delight . I sang the song and they, with only a copy of the words and the chords, proceed to improvise so brilliantly that I stopped playing my guitar and performed percussion with a little-known instrument called gnashed teeth. Baptiste was only 18 at the time and I could almost have been his grandfather though I'm informed that this is not the case.  He's as good as Charlie Parker even if "My Old Flame" isn't on the album.

A search for him on Youtube reveals several virtuosic examples of his work. Sounds great to my untutored ear. And even better to my tutored ear.

Here he is at one of the most prestigious (sp?) jazz clubs in France: at one point you can see the other two horn players looking at each other with a "What the Hell's this?" look on their faces. Obviously Thirty Year Sessionmen...

Rob, which was the tutored ear? I saw both in Paris but didn't look all that closely. Both obviously in fine form.

Incredible playing by the young Baptiste. The tenor man never gets into his stride and the trumpet does what trumpeters do. But the alto is in another league.
