Does anybody know how long it might take to drive from Camden to Walthamstow on a Sunday afternoon?  I have to be in Camden for the weekend of 10/11 February and I usually let the train take the strain rather than dare bring my car into London, but if it's possible to make the trip safely in less than an hour then such an opportunity would certainly merit a change in transport.

The computer says that it's only eight miles from point to point and should take a quarter of an hour, but my experience of London traffic has never included driving anywhere near 32 mph so if there is some helpful native on the Forum I should be most grateful to receive a local assessment.

I can't claim to be a native, but I have driven through Camden on many occasions (admittedly not to Walthamstow) and I'm pretty sure an hour would be more than enough time on a Sunday afternoon/evening, barring some sort of major catastrophe causing all major roads to be closed, etc. That would be 8 mph which even in London should be achieveable  Wink

Whether parking is easy in Walthamstow (having missed all Pete's previous gigs there) I couldn't say, but hopefully someone who knows will answer that one.

Of course it's a short trip by tube or bus from Camden to Euston (a 15 min walk from Camden High St) and thence by Victoria Line to Walthamstow, which you could consider if you want to get the train. Again I would guess an hour is enough, except I don't know how far the venue is from the tube station at the other end - might be pushing it if it's a hike.

Again hopefully someone more knowledgeable will answer.

I hope I can make it myself this time - it would be good to see Pete in a club-type environment again  Smiley

Cheers

Hi Stephen
I would reckon on half an hour or so for driving from Camden to Walthamstow - an hour should be masses.  Parking will be no trouble round the back streets of Wood Street on a sunday - well once you have played a bit of hunt-the-space!  The tube is not a great option for this gig - the nearest tube station is probably Walthamstow central - a good couple of miles to walk (although no doubt country folk take such small distances in their stride  Wink ).
cheers

Thanks for the input chaps: it looks like a good opportunity to see the man again (twice in less than six months!) and might prove an interesting juxtaposition with Spamalot the evening before.

Stephen - probably a more accurate estimate of how long it might take to drive from Camden to Wood St Walthamstow comes from my wife (Mary) - she says 40 minutes.

Thanks for the alert Sean (that was you at the club last night?)

Just to add that Wood Street National Rail station on the Liverpool Street to Chingford Line is directly opposite the pub and connects with the tube at Walthamstow Central (2 minutes journey). Although if coming from Central London and anywhere near Liverpool Street then the direct train from there is probably quickest and only takes about 17 minutes.

Full details of the various transport options are on the web site in Sean's posting.

Hope to see the regular faces who always seem to get to our PA gigs.

Cheers

That was indeed me last night Kevin Hi - and an excellent night it was too I might add - Spiers and Boden and some very good local performers- (sorry everyone else; we are heading swiftly off topic here) - and its a great lineup you have coming up - and of course I am very pleased to see you have booked Mr Atkin to come back to Walthamstow!
cheers

Just thought I'd alert other Midvodians who are planning to travel to Pete's gig on Sunday Feb 11  in Walthamstow from Liverpool St station that National Rail Enquiries gives the relevant Liverpool St departure times for Wood Street station as 1845 hrs (i.e. quarter to 7pm; arrives 1902) and 1900 hrs (arrives 1917), on the Chingford line.
The next departure after that is 1930 hrs (the service is half-hourly in the evening).

Now, it appears to me that different departure times are given on the club website ... so best to give yourself enough time to find the right train when you get to the station ! (Perhaps the train times are different in different seasons ??)

According to National Rail Enquiries, the last train departs Wood Street for Liverpool St at 2318 hrs, the penultimate one being 2248 hrs.

Synchronise watches, chaps ...

Walthamstow Setlist etc

Hi
Great gig tonight - Petre in really good vocal form - and any stress he may have felt (eg about driving to walthamstow through Arsenal fans - and arriving very shortly before going onstage - he was so delayed in arriving that Andy love was asked to contact him) had no apparent visible (or audible) effect on an excellent gig!
I took a setlist for Janice - I know I wasn't the only one who did (Hi Andy & Naomi)- but maybe I am the first one home (pathetic competitive nature  Smiley
But first a quick word about MV's onstage - it was a night for it ; Russ Chandler did a very nice version of Icarus (and was also responsible for what I thought was a very  good pa sound all night), Kevin Sheils is the MC but treated us to a nice version of Sally Free and Easy, Alan Neville did his own song about rock giants in their latter days which must surely be called Knights of the Realm - and Naomi Hyamson sang two excellent Burns songs (titles escape me now - sorry Naomi!) unnacompanied - excellent stuff!
and then on to Pete - as I say in great form  - here's the set list
1. a snatch of a Beatles song Latin - translated by an old friend of his Pete said (which song ; I feel Fine?) on guitar
2. Eye of the Universe - guitar
3. Flowers & The Wine - guitar
4. Dancing Master - Piano
5. Landscapes - Piano
6. Practical Man - guitar
7. Carnations on the Roof - guitar - a different rhythm for this one - strangely compelling.
8. Frangipanni was her Flower - Pete said he would do this differently - and then tried several different rhythms before settling into one - really nice to hear this. - piano
9. Beautiful Stranger - guitar - straight but great
interval - other people -raffle -  and then
1. Little Sammy Speedball - guitar
2. Winter Kept Us Warm - guitar - the first performance in public apparently - lovely!
3.Canoe - Piano
4. Touch has A Memory - again a different rhythm - very nice - guitar
5. Here We Stay - the marching version - which sounds like it has now become the definitive version - Pete talked about using the other music for something else - oh yes sorry on guitar
6. Double Agent - guitar
7 Secret Drinker - piano (I loved this!)
8. Laughing Boy - audience joins in on the chorus (invited to by Pete) - guitar
Pete off - 9. encore Girl On The Train - guitar
the evening ends - lots of roaring and applause - when it dies down one man stands and almost demands Master of The Revels - he is told by Kevin that its too late - but Pete says he will do a quick version (b--- y good of him to do so I thought!) - so;
10 Master of the Revels - piano - no intro and taken at a brisk pace - really lively. Great upbeat ending to the night actaly.
Big Big Thanks to Pete, Kevin Shiels and everyone for a really nice night out!!

Hey thanks for the setlist Sean! That was quick. Sounds as though it was a good evening.

Winter kept us warm - I haven't checked but I'm almost certain it had an outing at a Shrinks gig at the Folk House. (The snowy day the clutch went on my Punto and I couldn't get to Bristol - Its my lousy memory... what other men forget...) Smiley

By heck, that was quick, Mr Kelly  -  a setlist and, indeed, full report, submitted in what surely must be record time.

As for Pete's performance, all I can say is: WOW !!! It was moving  ...  thought-provoking ... wonderful.

And I am sure that everyone else who was at the Plough tonight (so full that people were virtually - though not quite - sitting on each other's laps) would agree.

Incidentally, the suggestion that the Latin Beatles song was "I Feel Fine" comes from me - but, er, I don't think actually that it was. Sorry.

Naomi

PS: My Burns songs were "Ye Banks and Braes" and "My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose"

Hi Chorus

If this machine weren't so decrepit (it takes around half-an-hour to reach a vaguely useable operating speed) I would've got my oar in, so to speak, much earlier.  Still, Sean does have a rather distinct advantage...race you back from Bristol, Sean?

Yes, it was a great evening - there must have been thirty songs played and/or sung, all told, in a wide variety of styles.  For a significant part of the proceedings there was a black-and-white cat curled up at my feet, evidently appreciative of the entertainment.  Bet Glen Matlock didn't raise a purr when he played!

Just a few things quickly to add (because work-time approaches)

The Beatles song was "She's A Woman" -- the one wot starts: My love don't give me presents...

"Touch Has A Memory" was played on keyboard, not guitar, (a nice surprise - is this a 'first', Jan?)

"Carnations On The Roof" had, in parts, a reggae feel to it and a highly experimental middle eight (if that's the correct term).

"Eye Of The Universe" , "Touch Has A Memory" , "Here We Stay" , "Secret Drinker" -- all absolutely outstanding.

And only one police siren throughout !

A.

Many and large thanks to everyone (a) for being there and (b) for being so indulgent.   Four hours from Bristol on a Sunday evening seems a bit much, regardless of the Arsenal traffic.  I suppose it keeps the organisers' adrenalin flowing.   I was on literally almost as soon as I arrived, so I don't have much recollection of the first set - but maybe that's the way to do it (not that I'd make a habit of it - I don't like having to feel my way quite so unfocusedly).  Heigh-ho.   I seem to remember a similarly tedious trip to and last-minute arrival at the Islington FC some years ago - but that was on a weekday.

Yes, for those who weren't there, the Latin Beatles song was prompted by my having just re-made contact the person who wrote the translation (and lots of others) in 1964.  And yes, it was 'She's a Woman' (Est Amica) - 'Mea non dat mi dona/Scio quam sit mi bona/Nil habet quod mihi det quam/Caritatem sempiternam/Mea non dat mi dona/Cum me derelictum puto/Sunt qui dicunt eam modo/Fallere, scio falsum/Est amica quae bene scit/Est amica quae me amabit'  etc.  Try it!   It even rhymes!  which is more than the Romans figured out how to do.

And Carnations - yes, I reverted to something like the original (recorded) tempo, but put the refrain into half time.  Gives it a different emphasis.  Seemed to work.  May try that again some time.

Trip back to Bristol was a breeze - hope everyone's was equally easy.

Many another thank

Just like to add my twopennysworth to a review of a wonderful night at a great venue. I thought Pete was in excellent form (travelling difficulties nonwithstanding); Eye Of the Universe, Carnations On The Roof, Touch Has A Memeory & Canoe were all outstanding for me, but every song was a real delight. And we didn't have to pay extra to see and hear the sound-check.

And I had a front row seat (got their ridiculously early due to NO travelling difficulties), and won a raffle prize (gee, that never happens). My friend Susannah apprently asked Pete when we to expect a new album and was told hopefully this year...

Thanks for your kind comments, and all of you for coming along. I think I'm starting to recognise many of the faces now.

The club has been going strongly since moving to The Plough and last night was amongst one of the best we've had since moving.

Pete is always such a pleasure to hear so expect us to have him back again as soon as reasonably possible.

Hope to see you all again soon. If you are at any other gig where I am say hello in case I don't make the immediate connection.

Cheers
