I hope no one becomes discouraged or depressed at the seeming lack of enthusiasm.  I'm sure it's not personal.

As "an organiser" (of many things) myself, I have learnt that even "firm expressions of interest" aren't even enough to ensure that people turn up on the day.

Sadly, I don't think that the oDs are viable these days....particularly now that Pete and Clive are on the road again (so as to speak) and more "available" performance wise.

I'm so pleased I got the chance to come to Hebden Bridge (the only one I attended).   It was a great atmosphere and we all had a good time.

But maybe now, a smaller event (like we plan for November) is more appropriate.  Must admit, on the recent tours, I missed the intimacy that will always be there between performer and audience in the smaller venues.

Needless to say, I will attend large OR small venues in the future!  Pete (and Clive) are just too good to miss!

I think you're right Julian about the age of the *oD having passed although I'm not sure it's necessarily to do with P&C touring. After all, a very small proportion of MV's went to see them on tour.
Love the tapping foot btw!  Wink

One of the best things about the XoDs, especially the early ones, was the participation. We weren't there just to hear a PA concert, however much that was the highlight. We were also there to hear our own scratch tribute bands, individuals, Mel on the lyrics etc.

I'm getting the sense that people are no longer interested in doing this, or perhaps don't have the time. I know that the Beautiful Strangers just ran out of steam and practice time, especially when we lost a drummer.

Subversive thought - has the return of Pete and Clive to something resembling the mainstream removed the sense of arcane knowledge that brought us all together in the first place? Is this why the level of interest has fallen off?

Before someone kills me, let me correct our band name to The Beautiful Changers.

Well, I am still very interested. In fact, I hope I can make it. Of course, I never had the chance to attend any of the tour shows (which just didn't seem attractive enough to pull me across the Atllantic). Not only the intimate setting; also, the set, which is bound to be more interesting, and hearing what Pete may have to say about the music in a smaller forum, get me quite excited. Not to mention meeting the man himself.

Idea for a thread (following one of Pete's posts): what we would like Pete to do at PoD. I vote for cover songs.

I agree, Leslie. And after a few years, it's not just seeing Pete perform that makes the XoDs the enjoyable events they are, it's the meeting up with old friends, now of several years' standing. One problem I've had with the "formal" concerts is that I've never had time to exchange more than a few fleeting words with many people because of the lack of time between the entertainment, or afterwards if you have trains to catch, etc. I hope that at least some time will be allowed at Sutton for simply talking to each other, or sharing a drink in the bar, etc.

Your subseuqent name correction noted! I think the problem with the Changers was really due to the difficulty of us all getting together because of our geographic dispersal. I would be happy to have another bash if I could find a bunch of like-minded people a bit closer to home. My attempts to form bands via MV failed somewhat dismally Sad Sad (let's see what the smileys make of those, eh?)

Maybe it's time at least for a Changers reunion anyway - any takers?

I admit that the magic of discovering Pete had other fans has dissipated somewhat now that so much has been achieved (thanks largely to Steve's efforts). Perhaps in the case of some MVs that translates into a sense of "job done" and subsequent inactivity. But there will always be some of us who still enjoy these events and would not want to miss them if we could help it.

As for the Sutton PoD, I'm looking forward to it and although it might seem disappointing to some, I won't let the change of venue or lack of support from others spoil my enjoyment of it. Just think of what they're all missing, eh?

I hope my quoting worked OK - if not my comments probably won't make much sense (nothing new there, huh?)

Cheers

Yes, Paul, although I've never been to an XoD I agree that socialising has to be an important part  That's why the schedule (still not yet finalised) will hopefully contain an initual meeting / gathering period, a half-hour tea / coffee break in the afternoon, one and a half hours for supper, a half-hour interval in the evening performance, and a final hour's social at the end.

After all, it's not just another gig.  It's an MV gathering.

Hi there!

Did you know that The Woodstock has a Website?
http://www.sutton.gov.uk/Sutton/Relaxing+and+Leisure/Heritage/Woodstock.htm

And....
Someone has asked  me if children can be admitted to the event.
If it's in the (separate) function room, I imagine it will be Ok?

There's a phone number for the pub which I've advised them to call and check:

Thanks to Julian for the telephone number of the Woodstock, however the family it calls were a little confused,   Correct number according to Yell is  0207 408 2008 just to avoid any confusion.

This is a bit cheeky of me, I know its on MV  but would it be possible for Richard to post on the forum a summary of the arrangements as they stand for PoD with date, venue, location, time if known etc.
I've just been juggling between the MVarchive, the web forum, the internet and a very elderly A-Z trying to get a room in a hotel on the right day in the right place.
If its there and I haven't seen it please accept my apologies and tell me which thread!

Sorry, Jan (and everybody else who's coming), I know it's a bit late in coming but I HAVE been working on it in between work, domestic commitments and other PoD stuff.  If I can stay awake long enough it may even be up later tonight; and when it does come there'll be no problem in finding it, I promise you!

No need to apologise Richard. I'm sure you've got quite enough to do and I had a bit of a nerve asking. You'd already posted all the stuff on the mailing list and I just thought it would be good to have a proper summary on the forum that we could all refer to over the next month or two, when necessary.
I didn't expect to get exactly what I'd asked for within a few hours! Thank you very much indeed for the Lowdown on PoD, just what was needed.

Hi - further to the phone number and children thing, I rang 020 8644 8512 today and...
a) - that is the correct number for the correct Woodstock!
b) - They confirmed no problem with children 'cos its in the function room and we're not selling tickets on the door, (Well - unless we really do get strapped for cash, I guess!).

(It occurs to me that maybe they are not parents themselves - those of us who are would never use the phrase 'no problem with children')

See you....

Just to say good luck with the Pub of Dreams this year, I'd come - I live ten minutes from Sutton - but I'm on my gap year in Argentina (trying to impress the local talent by playing Lady of a Day and passing it off as 'a little number I wrote myself' - sorry Mr. Atkin). Anyway, I hope it all goes well for everyone!
