Clive on Victoria Wood:
Quote:

The critic and writer Clive James said of Wood: “As a TV dramatist alone, she is on a par with Alan Bennett, while as a creator of comedy programmes she changed the field for women and indeed for everybody, because very few of the men were trying hard enough as writers before she came on the scene and showed them what penetrating social humour should actually sound like.

I post this here, as I don't know anywhere else to put it [given Steve's request for discrimination]. It's been a bummer of a week/year, has it not? The only good news appears to be the news of Pete's ongoing recovery, and the relatively recent delight of turning to the back [but one] page of the Saturday Guardian's colour comic for some typically insightful and moving comments from one of one's favourite writers. I tend to turn to this page first!
My only other point is to register my pleasure in being recently sent a recording of the  arguably slightly bizarre pairing of Leon Thomas singing with Nucleus, live in Montreux, 1970. The relevance of this to Midnight Voicers is that it includes not only the pleasure of a black man yodelling, but also the playing of the great Chris Spedding. Grand!
I hope the posting of this will not intrude on the safe space of any reader...
