If any of you are admirers of one of Pete's master works (IMHO) - This Sceptered Isle - then an offer which I spotted today may be of interest to you.  I've wanted to own the complete original set for many years now but am too mean to cough up the necessary £150 or so.

It was purely by chance that I thumbed through the pile of extra junk that comes in the Radio Times today and discovered that "The Book People" are selling all 29 CDs for the amazing price of £30.  I quickly checked their web site to see if this was a wind-up and it appears to be true.  I left the magazine open in a very prominent place so that my wife could not fail to spot the ad and that's my Christmas present sorted!

If any of you who don't own it already and have a thirst to know what made this country great (and in some cases not so great...) then rummage in your Radio Times or try this link.

Alan.

Well spotted indeed, it could be just what I'm looking for.

As with many things I came to British history rather late in life. My school life was spent learning Australian history, year after year. There's nothing actually wrong with Australian history, it's just that there's not very much of it, so when I stumbled on a copy of Churchill's "A History of the English-Speaking Peoples" I felt like Dom Perignon when he discovered champagne.

That is probably the worst analogy in the history of the English-speaking peoples, and according to QI the champagne thing is an urban myth anyway, but you know what I mean.

I've since read it a few times, but with no real knowledge of how Churchill rates as historian. He rates fairly well as a saviour of the free world so perhaps I've put too much trust in him. Just in case, I've been intermittantly looking for a work that is similar in scope but by someone else. I spend a fair amount of time in a vehicle so audio is a logical medium.

How say you, fellow MVs? Is it the sort of thing I'm after?

Surely a Voice must have filmed a PA gig at sometime and could stick it on YouTube? Even I'm there... Wink
