MV gigs - post here

I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting this, but it occurred to me that some MVs might have their own gigs they could publicise to others here, especially if there's any kind of a PA connection. So if anyone has any gigs in future, maybe they could post them in this thread. (I'm assuming of course that there will be no conflict with any future PA or Shrinks gigs, and any posting of events to clash with those would be frowned upon  Angry  )

With that in mind, to get the ball rolling, I'm doing a support slot at Baldock Folk Club tonight - the main guest is the excellent Chris Smyth. I intend to include a PA/CJ song in my set. Proceedings start at 8:30pm, and the club is at the Orange Tree pub in Baldock, Herts - see here for directions (you'll need to scroll down to find the directions to the club lower down the page).

If any MVs do come along, please make yourself known and say hello!

Cheers

Paul

Another blatant gig plug: As most if not all of you are aware, this Thursday 25th Jan is Burns night, and Tam Lin (the band I'm in) will be doing a gig at the Lord Roberts (pub) in the Market Square, Sandy, Beds SG19 1HT (map here).

We will be performing from 7:30 onwards (entry is free).

The evening will naturally have a Scottish theme so I can't promise any PA songs this time (unless anyone can think of any PA/CJ songs that would fit the bill? Suggestions invited!)  Smiley

To attract people in, there will be free haggis - how can you resist?  Grin

If any MVs should happen to come along, please come and say hello - I'll be the bloke without the kilt (ooerr, missus! Don't worry, I will have trousers on).

Cheers

Paul

p.s. I hope this is OK to plug gigs here? No-one's said otherwise yet!

Be careful what you say about Charles Edward Louis John Casimir Silvester Maria Stuart - Michael Marra wrote a song about Culloden and the Prince's followers and it got him a death threat delivered before a concert!  Seriously.

Funnily enough, Leslie, that was the first (and so far, only) idea that occurred to me when I posted this morning  Smiley

It could well indeed but isn't there a more universal theme in there somewhere? What that theme might be I leave to you to figure out. The song stands up perfectly well in itself but I have always felt that ( as with other classics from the canon) I was missing out on a reference somewhere. (I know the title comes from an Eliot poem which would imply that there's a bit more to it than meets the eye.

In 1970 Elton John and Bernie Taupin explored the same universal theme in the very excellent song "The King Must Die".  (Whatever happened to them?)

Blatant Gig Plug (BGP) no. 3 - I will be doing the support slot with my musical other half (and fellow band member) Alan at Baldock & Letchworth Folk Club this Wednesday at 8:30 (at the Orange Tree pub in Baldock - see the first post in this thread above for directions, etc.). If any MVs have nothing better to do, please come along and say hello. A bit short notice, but owing to a communications error, I only found out last night. I can't promise a PA song, depending on how it goes, but we'll see...  Smiley

The main act is The Dealers, a duo from Kent, whom I haven't seen before.

(Come on MVs, let's see some of your gigs here - I didn't intend this thread to be just for me!)

Cheers

What follows is a shameless plug, and nepotism too.

Not exactly a gig, and not exactly MV either, but at least MV related - related to me, that is, and I'm an MV...

Over on the Music board, Secret Drinker said:

"I wish I had more time to look around Myspace properly - I'm sure there must be loads of brilliant artists lurking in there, just waiting to be discovered..."

...like (ahem) my son Dan (the guitar man) and his musical partner Vanessa, who perform under the name of Diefenbaker (after the Mountie's wolf in Due South, but don't ask me why). I don't know if their music is very MV-friendly (though, as the recent poll showed, we have all sorts here), but that doesn't seem to be one of their major concerns.

They are at
http://www.myspace.com/diefenbaker

Among the samples, Long Way Home is, in my paternal opinion, the best showcase for Dan's guitar playing.

Just thought I'd mention it...

BGP4 follows - if you don't want to know, look away now.

Tomorrow night (Sat 3rd March) Tam Lin (the band I'm in) will be performing at the King's Arms pub, (near the river at 24 St. Marys Street, Bedford, MK42 0AS), starting at 8:30 pm. There are four of us (me on guitar/vocals, two fiddlers and another guy on vocals and percussion), and we do a variety of traditional and contemporary material, instrumental (tunes from Ireland, Scotland, France and even England) and vocal, including the odd PA/CJ song - perhaps I should have said 'occasional' there  Wink

It's free entry, so if anyone stops by, please say hello (so far no MV has done so, but I'll keep trying... you never know!)   Smiley

Now then, I also have another one (just me on my own this time, without the band) next Wednesday (7th) but that one's an all-ticket event and it's sold out...

...pause for gasps of amazement...   Grin

...but I can't take the credit for that, I'm afraid! I'll be supporting American folk singer Julie Felix, for her gig at Baldock Folk Club (she's currently on tour here). I expect many of you are old enough (like me) to remember her from the Frost Report, etc. back in then 1960s. Anyway, wish me luck - I'll need it  Shocked

Cheers

I seem to recall that some Rock Festival or other back in the Sixties, she asked for requests and some bright spark shouted "Toad!" which rather put a stop to that. But don't worry, Paul, you'll blow her offstage as long as you don't ask for requests.

Well, it went pretty well, I'm glad to say! Julie was excellent, and seeing her took me right back to the 1960s. She still does some of the old protest songs, with her version of Blowing in the Wind rewritten with mentions of Bush, Blair etc. But she does a lot more, including some Spanish Mexican and Cuban songs. She's a lovely person too, and it was a pleasure to meet her - she was kind enough to thank me publicly for my set. Sorry, just had to mention it - something to add to my 'folk cv' alongside Pete!  Smiley

I had Laughing Boy on the setlist but I'm afraid I ran out of time - I'll put it at the top of the list for next time  Smiley

Tam Lin will be appearing tomorrow, St Patrick's Day, at the Bucks Head, Little Wymondley, near Stevenage/Hitchin, Herts (see link for directions, etc.)

As you might expect, we'll be perfoming Irish tunes and songs all evening, starting at 8:30pm. Entry is free.
