I originally put this in the News thread, but it probably belongs here. Hi All, I noticed that the Hove Folk Club Upcoming Guests page has the following happy entry: Friday 5th June: Pete Atkin Pete was there last year and it was an excellent evening. The club is enthusiastically run by Robb Johnson who is a very good singer-songwriter in his own right. The Folk Club is held in an upstairs room at the Poets' Corner (formerly the Eclipse) pub, at 33 Montgomery Street, Hove BN3 5BF Further details on the Hove Folk Club website. It's a little way off yet but I thought I'd let you all know as time flashes by quickly so it will soon bbe here (or is it just me ?). More distant MVs could make a seaside weekend of it - might even get some sunshine in June! Cheers, ChrisH

Kate and I intend to come. Do we need to camp out 3 days beforehand to get a place?

Hi Colin, It is worth getting there before 7:30 for the 8:00 start. Pete was there in April a couple of years ago and people were crammed in the doorway and sitting on the window sills. When Pete was there last June, they were using a bigger room, so there was a bit more space. If they are using the bigger room again, there should be enough room but I guess it depends on the night ! Look forward to seeing you there

Well, what a great evening that was at Hove Folk Club. Pete played to packed room above The Poet's Corner and was as enthusiastically received as always. It's been quite a while since I've been able to get along to a gig and I was in no way disappointed this evening, other than having to sit in the most uncomfortable chair ever made. A mixture of the old and the new in one of the best of Pete's live performances I have seen. There was a fluency and depth of detail, particularly in his piano performances that grabbed my attention; I didn't just hear, I listened. I had to. Some wonderful jazzy accompaniments to some of the newer material and beautifully sensitive re-visits to some of the old songs, particularly The Road of Silk, one of my top favourites. I wondered if Pete was playing games with us during that one. A few times he interjected a brief verbatim musical quote from another song - the short descending sequence from Between Us There Is Nothing, I think that precedes the line "Outside of this are Soho and the far flung Islands", I think. So many of my favourites on the bill tonight. Those of us that turned out tonight got a very pleasant and unexpected surprise. Pete used the gig to launch his much awaited new CD 'The Colours Of The Night' ahead of its official release date. And so it is that I am absolutely chuffed to naafi breaks to be sitting here listening to it as I type. All I'll say is this - you are in for a real right proper treat and no mistake! This is by far the most significant new release in a very long time in my view. It's wonderful to still be able to go along and hear Pete perform these priceless lyrical and musical gems, some of which I've known for 40 years now! That probably explains my mild surprise when Pete's encore, Canoe, was selected as a suitable 'old' song to finish with! I've only know it for 15 years or so! Set list as folllows: 1 - Thief In The Night (g) 2 - The Way You Are With Me (g) 3 - Between Us There Is Nothing (p) 4 - Sessionman's Blues (p) 5 - I've Got Me To Thank (p) 6 - No Dice (p) 7 - Perfect Moments (p) 8 - The Beautiful Changes (g) 9 - The Colours Of The Night (g) Interval 10 - Laughing Boy (g) 11 - The Last Hill That Shows You All The Valley (g) 12 - You'd Better Face It Boy (p) 13 - The Road Of Silk (p) 14 - A King At Nightfall (p) 15 - Time To Burn (p) 16 - Beware Of The Beautiful Stranger encore 17 - Canoe (p)

And a lovely time was had by all! Robb, as genial as I remember him from Grendon Prison (long story), sang an opening song about the second world war, and he was followed by Black Cap, a trio, who sang about the first. Kevin Barber sang "Mountains of Mourne! and "The Mary Ellen Carter", and we were in to the main event Pete's first set was G Thief in the night G Just the way you are K Between us there is nothing K Session man's blues K Me to thank K No dice K Perfect Moments G The Beautiful Changes G Last Ditch In the second half, Robb sang another song, then a selection of Ians (including one with a 12-string guitar) and a Roger sang several songs. Pete's second set was G Laughing Boy G Last Hill that shows you all the valley K You better face it, boy K Road of silk K A king at nightfall K Time to burn G Beware of the Beautiful stranger K Canoe Also on sale to the eager crowd were hot of the press copies of Colours of the Night (not officially out until July). I managed to hear it right through twice on the way home - there are some gems in there!

Gerry's comment about Canoe being a young item got me thinking - it's 10 years since Robb played the gig in Grendon prison (does anyone else remember being there?), and about 40 years since I first ran the sound desk for Pete. 40 glorious years!

| Yes, Kate and I were there! Can't remember the name of the pub we adjourned to afterwards. When we got home on Saturday we put the new CD on were enthralled. And then, because we knew our neighbour was out we replayed "Last Ditch" VERY LOUD. Makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck!
