A little way ahead, but I know how busy MVs' diaries get.  The entirely admirable Robb Johnson (indeed, one of our number) having moved to the south coast now finds himself running a Folk Club on the first Friday of every month, and has generously offered me his April spot.  I'm sure he'll post details and/or a link in due course.  He tells me he's trying to come up with a new song each month, which is a lesson to us all.  So if you're even vaguely in the area, or in the vague area, do please give him your support.  You know it makes sense. The January guest, apparently, is Peter Sarstedt - almost as venerable as yours truly.

Love & Death & Politics

Apropos of which, on Friday November 7 2008 The Guardian's Robin Denselow had some very positive things to say Robb Johnson and the Irregulars' recent album Love & Death & Politics:

"Robb Johnson's latest batch of bleak, solid songs have the same no-nonsense quality as the album title. He writes about contemporary England, and is backed by a distinctively English-sounding band, a standard rock four-piece with melodeon taking the place of lead guitar and the occasional burst of viola from his guest, Attila the Stockbroker. The result tempers rock ballads with a folk edge, and is ideally suited to the blend of anger and nostalgia in many of his best songs, with their recurring theme of squandered hopes. So the opening Spirit of 45 sounds like a cheerful traditional English dance song, driven by Roger Watson's melodeon, but develops into a lament for the lost dreams of the post-war era. He follows with a guitar thrash intro to Saturday Night in Albion, a story of drinking and violence, and the even more bitter Little Angels, which tackles drugs, prostitution, child abuse and the Ipswich murders. Some of the later songs on greed or royalty are less inventive, but the bittersweet..".

Denselow's piece arrived a  little truncated on The Guardian site, but I think the reader gets the idea.

You might try this with RH6 0NP as your start point and BN3 5BF as your destination or, indeed,  this together with this using BN1 1NJ as your start point and BN3 5BF as your destination.

Sorry, I should have said that you are quite right about its being 70 miles from Heathrow, and that's way beyond being a nice step of the road.

Advance Booking: Hove - 3rd April 2009

Due to a high level of interest in Pete's gig on Friday April 3rd, host Robb Johnson and the other good people at Hove Folk Club (at The Eclipse in Montgomery Street, 8 to 11 p.m.) have set up an advance booking facility. This page tells you exactly how to reserve your place (out of the 60 or so available), without deposit, at least until five past eight on the night. After that, if you haven't claimed it, your slot will be released to those queueing right down the hall (and possibly around the block).

This might be a good one at which to meet other Voices.

If you select "Upcoming Guests" on the Hove Folk Club web site it says that all advance tickets are sold. I sent an email on Saturday and got a reply on Sunday confirming that I have reserved tickets nos 11 and 12.

Don't believe everything you read and don't be put off if you wish to attend.

I think, Brian, that maybe you could believe everything you read. I e-mailed Robb and friends on Saturday to say that, unfortunately,  we (Steve and I) could not use our advance tickets and if they could re-allocate them that would be good. We had 11 and 12....

Have a great time!

Hi folks

I am a Robb friend and partly responsible for the ticketing at the club.

The club has only been going for around six months but we already have a good following and get some great guests.
We usually just have a pay on the night system but when Peter Starsted came to the club it was difficult as there was so many people. When we started to get even more interest for Pete we thought we should do something and the reserve system came into being. We have 52 tickets pre sold and another 10 to sell on the door. Most people will get a seat but some will be standing at the back with me, it is a small room over a small pub.

Robb Johnson is a prolific song writer and appears with his group the irregulars as well as solo or sometimes with Leon Rosselson. You can download some free music here

http://www.robbjohnson.co.uk/

I have a vinyl version of Beware the beautiful starnger which I hope Pete will sign on Friday and can not wait to hear the new material.

Looking forward to seeing you all on friday, buy lots of raffle tickets the prizes are stunning and it helps to run the club.

Nearest train station is Hove

I cannot beleive that I am the first 'Voice' to comment on the Hove gig.

I did not write a set list but Pete was on good form and arrived (by train - a point he made with the enigmatic adjunct 'more of which later') armed with guitar only and played a numer of piano songs including Sessionman's Blues.  A personal highlight for me was the third song of the set Carnations on the Roof!  Pete closed the first half with Girl on a Train.

Pete did 2 sets either side of an interval and segued a number of songs effectively and gave us a mix of old and new and 2 'first outings' one with Pete's lyric (I believe) and new song of Clive's.  Both new songs were well received by the audience.

The Hove Folk club is very friendly and seems to have a loyal following so it may be that there were few 'voices' at the gig.  Some of the songs were obviously new to many in the audience because the humour in Clive's lyrics were met with the laughter of the unfamiliar.

Phew! I'm back home now in Yorkshire after the Hove Folk Club gig at The Eclipse pub. MV Robb Johnson was in charge of the proceedings, and an excellent job he made of it. Robb sang a few songs and two of the club members did floor spots and then it was Pete's set. As Ian said, the whole set was on guitar with no microphone which meant that it was a lot more relaxed than usual without all the changing of chairs and adjusting of microphones.

1. Master of the revels
segue into
2. I need new words  - Rarely sung and beautiful.
segue into
3. Have you got a biro I can borrow?
(Inappropriately Nedd could only provide a clutch pencil but I was very grateful)
4. Carnations on the roof
5. Canoe - First time on guitar, it worked very well
6. Thief in the night
7. Sessionman's blues
8. Night surfing blues (provisional title)  A new Atkin-James lovesong. Should become a favourite. It has a middle eight (for those who are interested in that type of thing). Please could we have the lyrics for the website?
9. Girl on the train (with a hint of steam brakes)

Here we had an interval.
I recognised the gentleman sitting in front from a previous gig and unwisely asked him if he was a Midnight Voice. He wasn't. But he soon might be. (I had seen him at the Ravenswood, near East Grinstead a couple of years ago.)
The raffle wasn't your usual selection of CDs it was much more interesting involving chocolate, cakes, wine, beer, fluffy chicks ... and a tin of hummus.

10. Touch has a memory
11. Eye of the universe - I much prefer this on guitar and it was a superb performance.
12. Thirty year man
13. Sunlight gate. Pete changed the tempo on this one starting it very slowly indeed, playing around with the  timing.
After a bar or so of The Locomotion
14. Dancing Master - This one appears to be quite a challenge on guitar but the result had a certain charm
15. Beware of the beautiful stranger
16. Here we stay (Military version)
Then we were into requests
17. Frangipanni
18. Laughing boy - This being a folk club everyone joined in with the chorus
19. All I ever did - Thank you Nedd for requesting it on my behalf. It was lovely.
And the encore
20. Perfect moments

The pub was nice, the Folk Club members were  friendly and it was a very pleasant evening. I hope Robb will be able to invite Pete back again some time.
It was good to meet Kevin Coughlin and Brian Hazelden, there weren't many of the usual suspects in attendance. It sounded as though the songs were new to quite a few of the audience, you can always tell when the jokes get audible laughs!

Great Gig at the Eclipse on Friday, nice Pub too, all round good atmosphere. Thanks to Sally for advice re getting in as I had not booked advance tickets, not realisng till the wednesday before that they were available but me and my mate got in fine.

Knew all of the words to all of the 70's songs and it was nice to hear people laughing at some of the lines to girl on the train obviously hearing them for the first time.

Good set- belatedly thought I would have requested 'Prince of Aquitane' or 'Rider to the Worlds End' if I had thought of it at the time.

Liked Robb Johnson's stuff as well.

Did discover from talking to Pete Atkin that I could replace all my scratched vinyl  Pete Atkin albums with cds now and have done so. I had a win on the Grand National yesterday- 50p each way on Cerium at 500-1 which paid for this which was a bonus. I suppose it's the luck of the draw, I suppose it's the luck of the draw.

I,too, thoroughly enjoyed the Hove experience:it reminded me,in a way,of the first time I got to see Pete sing, many years ago,at the Three Horseshoes Folk Club in Hampstead. This time, though, the upstairs room was a bit smaller, the facilities pretty much on a par. There's nothing wrong with that, though, because 'our man' seemed at ease in his surroundings, which probably wasn't the case on the last occasion that I attended one of his gigs, again in the '70's,at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon.
Does anyone else recall attending said venues,I wonder?
Perhaps PA himself will be able to remember something of Ced and Jock, the co-organisers of the Three Horseshoes Club at the top of Hampstead hill......'Ye Jacobites by name',and such like.....
