I don't think there were any MVs present, so I might be able to get away with a wildly exaggerated of my triumph. As it is, I shall simply report that I performed in the Literature tent yesterday (Saturday) at about 915pm with that nice Mr Wallace on his new lightweight keyboard and together (except as indicated) we did: Perfect moments Thief in the night (no gtr) Have you got a Biro? (no kb) The Flowers and the wine (no gtr) Touch has a memory Beware of the beautiful stranger (no kb) Laughing boy Thirty year man (no gtr) We went on stage immediately after novelist Helen Walsh had read an extract from her most recent novel which consisted of a graphic, brutal, and explicit account of a racially motivated gang rape, so our stuff probably seemed, initially at any rate, like a musical version of the Chuckle Brothers by comparison. Iain Banks had done a turn much earlier and couldn't stay for my set, but gave me a large and generous plug towards the end of his Q&A. I'd also had a message from Antonia Quirke (whose book 'Madame Depardieu and the Beautiful Strangers' you really, really should read if you haven't already) but I don't know if she was there; if she was, probably she was too overawed in the presence of so much general adoration to say hello.

| Ah, surprise, surprise! (See my recent post "That thrill of recognition" on the "Words" board if you haven't the faintest idea of what I'm banging on about.) Richard

There was a review of the Latitude Festival in yesterday's Times, sadly no mention of our hero but there was a mention that some of the Tents were overfull to capacity (if that makes sense).

Though he had no great gifts of personality or mind, he was quite well respected.
