Clive on The Colbert Report
« : 27.03.07 at 07:08 »

A note for our American friends, and, indeed, anyone who may have access to Comedy Central's output

Clive is guest on the Thursday 29th edition of the Comedy Central's The Colbert Report, a spin-off of Jon Stewart's The Daily Show.

For the benefit of those who have not heard of The Colbert Report, this is a show which, instead of spoofing the headlines of the day, as Stewart does, spoofs the right-wing newsreaders, interviewers and commentators who have become personalities on the twenty-four-hour American news channels.

Well spotted, Kevin. I'll try to report (the 't' is silent) but will be in New York from tomorrow through Monday next week, so said report may be delayed. I hope I can catch the show in my hotel. I'll be curious to see how Clive deals with Colbert's sham aggressive manner. It has been said that John Stewart's The Daily Show is the only place you can get the truth about Bush on American TV. It is staple viewing in our house.

Hi Keith,

The Daily Show is currently showing on More 4 a "free to air" digital offshoot of Channel 4. So the basic format should not come as too much as surprise to Clive. And anyway who cut his teeth (and kept sane) on a show like  So it Goes is very unlikely to allow an the assumed gruffness of an American get the better of him.

Usenet users might like to know that The Colbert Report is regularly posted within days of its US broadcast in the newsgroups

and a little less frequently in

On a related topic, Mr James's conversation with Jeremy Isaacs, in his "In the Library" series - on Sky Arts, I think -  last week, was superb.

Particularly apposite were their comments on the decline of Channel 4 since its 1980s intellectual heyday.

O tempora, o mores, say I.

http://www.comedycentral.com/ has most of the Colbert Report posted each day following transmission. So Clive will probably be there on Friday. (The Daily Show clips are usually at the top of the page and Colbert lower down.)

I'm so looking forward to seeing this meeting of minds!

Hmm. Don't bother. In 5 minutes flat, and in the face of a barrage of easy (and effective with the studio audience) laugh-seeking stuff from his host, Clive valiantly manages the edgewise exposition of a couple of basic truths about 20th-Century history and intellectualism, and the odd sharp parry. But the flow of garbage is only stemmed for a moment. The book looks good.

I think I'll have to disagree with Steve on this one: Colbert was actually very gentle with Clive, and showed him considerably more respect than he usually does his guests.

I'm sure Clive knew what the Colbert Show is like before agreeing to appear, and he managed to plug the book well enough. Colbert did Clive the courtesy of listening and responding to his digs at Colbert's anti-intellectuallism instead of simply steam-rollering him with prepared gags.

Have a look at previous shows and you will see how well Clive did!

I do think, however, that getting Clive on Jon Stewart's Daily Show would have been much more suitable.

But I guess just reading the book is still the best bet.....
