Why Don't They Write Songs Like This Any More?

Lyric by Bill Ashton, music by Pete Atkin, jazz orchestra arrangement by Chris Smith Jr

Why don't they write songs like this any more?
The people used to like to sing them, that's for sure
I can't help it if I like my lyrics shevelled, ept and couth
I wish I could convert some of today's four-letter youth

They tell you that the only thing that really matters lately is the beat
Forget about interpretation, listen with your feet
I know this sort of sentiment will brand me as a square
But I can't bring myself to like things merely 'cause they're there

They say that thumping bass riffs are what get 'em on the floor
But I keep thinking it's insane when music hits the point of pain
Why don't they write songs like this any more?

Why don't they write songs like this any more?
The lyrics that they're writing are a total bore
Don't think about the content I said, just enjoy the style
If someone asks you what they're saying don't reply, just smile

No-one can hear you anyway, the music's far too loud
Don't worry if your hearing suffers, come and join the crowd
There was a time when singers used to care about the words
But now that sort of artistry is for the birds

This picture that I'm painting for you may seem rather black
But now in songs of wit and wisdom I detect the lack
Oh take me back to Porter burnin', Mercer, Kahn and Hart
When they set out to write a lyric they knew where to start

Music's more a part of life than it ever was before
But I keep wishing that they'd write some lyrics with a bit more bite
Why don't they write songs
It sure would right wrongs
Why don't they write songs like this any more?
