Errant Knight

Chord transcription by Paul Gunningham with suggested change by Pete Atkin

Note 1: This chord transcription is in G major, which seems to be what
Pete plays it in. It's a bit simplified compared to Pete's original version,
partly because it's easier to play and partly because I don't know the names
of some of the chords! Any improvements to it will be welcome - Paul Gunningham

Note 2: See comment from Pete Atkin below for description of chord Dm+G

Intro: G / / / / / / /

   G / Dm+G / C / D /
My Lady Anne your champion's depressed
    G / Dm+G / C / A7 /
I'm not in shape to carry on the quest
  D / D7 / E / E7 /
I have to keep my speed down to a trot
   Am / Am7 / D / D7 /
Or lose what little armour plate I've got

   G / Dm+G / C / D /
My screws are loose, my clamps are hanging off
   G / Dm+G / C / A7 /
My helmet topples every time I cough
  D / D7 / E / E7 /
I topple with it every time I charge
     Am / Am7 / D
I've gotta get this suit to a garage

     D D7 / G / F / E / E7 /
Oh do you wonder I fe-el so uptight
     A7 / Eb D G / E7 / A7 / Eb D
Times were never tougher for an errant knight

G / / / / / / /

(continue as above)

My faithful steed is the joke of Joyous Gard
And sensitive withal he takes it hard
His forward gears are shot, and what is worse
He's too slow for my safety in reverse

So there we go, my faithful steed and me
No third party, tax or M.o.T.
And there beside me rides my faithful squire
His card's unstamped, his trumpet fixed with wire

Oh do you wonder I feel so uptight
Times were never tougher for an errant knight

For tomorrow I must fight Sir Valentine
Thy hateful ravisher, the prancing swine
The time has come for him to meet his fate
From me, Sir Sagramore the second-rate

The joust is in the morning, Lady Anne
And you not there? My one and only fan
This time I pray that I may stay the course
And not fall from the crane and miss my horse

Oh do you wonder I feel so uptight
Times were never tougher for an errant knight

But Justice, God and Truth watch over me
At half a sovereign ringside, children free
Sir Valentine the Violent is through
Providing God comes up with something new

'Cause his drop-forged armour and his tungsten axe
His horse that runs on caterpillar tracks
That showy stuff is strictly for parades
Like his rocket launcher, radar and grenades

Oh do you wonder I feel so uptight
Times were never tougher for an errant knight

    G / Dm+G / C / D /
Sir Valentine the Violent, supersword
G / Dm+G / C / A7 /
Tilts with me tomorrow on the sward
    D / D7 / E / E7 /
Thy just revenge lies in my hand and eye
   Am / Am7 / D / D7 /
My faithful squire has bade me do or die
        Am / Am7 / D
And put all his money on the other guy

     D D7 / G / F / E / E7 /
So dost thou wonder I fe-el so uptight
     A7 / Eb D G
Times were never tougher for an errant knight

     D D7 / G / F / E / E7 /
Oh do you wonder I fe-el so uptight
     A7 / / /
     Times were never tougher
          C / / /
     Like rugged, man, and rougher
     A7 / Eb D G / E7 / A7 / Eb D
Times were never tougher for an errant knight

G / / / / / / /

Pete Atkin comments:

"'Errant Knight' will do just fine - give or take the odd 11th or 9th - except
for one thing which I think does make a difference. The F following the G
in the Chorus is OK, but in the verses it will sound a lot better (I think)
if instead of F following G you play D minor over G. It's actually very
easy (as always), especially if you play the G with the open shape (3rd fret
bottom string, second on the A, third on the top string, the rest open).
Try 3rd finger on 3rd fret bottom string (note G), 1st finger 1st fret top
string, 2nd finger second fret 3rd string, 4th finger third fret second
string - making a conventional Dm shape on the top three strings. I then damp
the 5th string with the leaning-across third finger, leave the fourth open,
and - bingo. Easier than it sounds, and I think you'll agree it does sound
better."

Update from Paul Gunningham (September 1999):

Thanks Pete - I do agree - it is and it does! I've finally got around to
incorporating this change into the transcription above. I'll work on the
9ths and 11ths...
