Title: Diacritics

How does Sean Kelly get that accent over the a?
It seems discourteous to miss it out but time's too short at present to check the manuals.

I'll bet he was given it at an early age. But there are various other ways for the rest of us, including any of these:

1. Copy it from his message (highlight the "á" or the whole "Seán", ctrl-C, then ctrl-V into yours).
2. Ensure Num Lock is on, then, using the numeric key pad, do alt-0225.
3. From the Windows Start menu, use the Character Map ([Start » Programs » Accessories » System Tools » Character Map » (select á) » Select » Copy], then ctrl-V into your message).
4. In an HTML source document, enter "á".
5. In an MS Word document, do "ctrl-'" (that's hold <control> and hit the single inverted comma key) followed by "a". This shortcut may also be used in other Windows programs if your keyboard is set to "United States-International".

Or if (like me) you don't know or can't remember the codes, use the MS Word Insert > Symbol... menu option to select from an impressive range of accented characters (and other things), then copy and paste them into your message - déád èãsy!  :D

(But be warned - they don't all work when you paste them into your message, as I just discovered!)

If you're interested I have a Word document that lists the diacriticals that can be created using alt and the numeric keypad

or you could just do what I do - hit the alt gr key (alternative grammar - or something very like that!) to the right of the space bar at the same time as you hit the a - you can vary the language setting to Greek etc but the default will do for my name anyway.

so, now will you write to me Jan!  ;)

Gosh it works!

How embarrassing to know that I've worked with a keyboard for nearly 15 years, and never even thought to ask what that key was for.  :-[
There's another key next but one to it with a little arrow pointing to the top of a page, I think I'll save the excitement of that for tomorrow.
