If not "horny-handed sons of the soil", then, to re-establish part of the quotation, shiny-knuckled sons of toil - Carnations on the roof of course:

Incidentally, I had always wondered if this was the only song to reference Swarfega. A quick search reveals that it is a select group with The Matthew Project and Goldfrapp and a few obscure techno outfits. Ah well ...

Well done for getting that in, Jan. An indication of what people of a certain generation are up against here is in the comment on Delaney and Bonnie (rendered as Bonnie and Delaney):
