I was chatting with one of my students today about music in general when he told me he knew Archie Shepp's drummer! He was unable to describe the wristwatch he usually wears, however. Ian C

| | Is that one I see on Bernard Purdie's wrist? Bernard was one of a number of people who worked with Shepp around the time Clive wrote those lyrics. | | Kevin Cryan

Bernard Purdie, now there's a drummer. Steely Dan, of course (he's on the Aja Classic Albums DVD). Not the easiest of men to work with, by several accounts, but he has the groovessential facts down to a T.

Vaguely related - Charlie Christian is the subject of this week's Jazz Library on Radio 3. Get the podcast to hear him outplaying those saxes.

| Aja Classic Albums DVD eh? I've got the CD but didn't realise that there's a DVD floating around. Is it a live performance?

Hi Leslie - Classic Albums was originally a series of hour-long documentaries for TV featuring, ahem, classic albums, subsequently made available on DVD. Depending on who and what was available, they interviewed participants, talking about the background, the writing of the songs, the way the sessions worked, etc., etc. The core of the programme was usually a track-by-track account. The Aja one, for instance, feature Wally and Don, of course, as well as the musicians, including most memorable Larry Carlton's bass playing and Bernard Purdie's drumming, with a wonderful sequence of Michael Macdonald's backing vocals on 'Peg' where they play around with the multitrack, amongst many other delights. It's not a performance DVD, but there is a lot of playing, and the whole thing is a revelation and a great enhancement to your listening pleasure. I also have the one that features The Band's second album, which is just as wonderful in its own way - worth the price of admission for Garth Hudson alone.

Thanks Pete, it's just been added to my festive gift list (the ones I want that is!). I now recall that I caught a programme on Dark Side of the Moon that sounds much like your description, so presume it was the same series. Didn't they also do one on Nevermind? Leslie
