Clive James, Pete Atkin & "The Word"

Blogger David Hepworth posted a People You Didn't Know Rocked… entry to the online diary he maintains on The Word site. It prompted this exchange. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> What about Clive James? He wrote all those terrific lyrics for Pete Atkin. If anyone hasn't heard them I recommend starting with the Beware Of The Beautiful Stranger album. • Login or register to post comments stuart robin | 1 February 2008 - 1:33pm -------------------------------------------------------------------- and then you have to get A King At Nightfall, which opens with the incomparable "Between Us There Is Nothing". It is particularly apt that this material gets a shout here, in the "home of intelligent life on planet Rock". • Login or register to post comments Vulpes Vulpes| 1 February 2008 - 2:14pm -------------------------------------------------------------------- It's in my Top 10 albums Stuart & Vulpes, you are a men of taste. A King At Nightfall is that rare beast, a clunker-free album. "Between Us.." is indeed the most beautiful love song and there are others just as good, including "Apparition In Las Vegas", the best song ever written about Elvis. As I recall, Atkin & James were big Peel faves pre-punk. BBC7 must feature one Atkin production a day. His biggest achievement was 'This Sceptered Isle', Christopher Lee's 300-episode, 46-hour history of the British Isles. Renaissance man that he is, Atkin also provided the voice for a character in the last Wallace & Grommit movie. • Login or register to post comments johnsey | 4 February 2008 - 10:29pm >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Kevin Cryan

So if you click on "What about Clive James?" you should arrive on the section of The Word page on which that piece of text appears. I know full well that some of you will have worked this out already, but I feel that none of you should have had to, or indeed have to. My apologies. Kevin Cryan

Perhaps someone could persuade Mr Hepworth or his colleague Mr Ellen to include a feature in The Word to coincide with the official release of Midnight Voices. Incidentally, I was interested to see from these postings that Jim Davidson is apparently a fan of ELP. Nice to have all one's prejudices reinforced in one handy package...

Whilst in no way wishing to defend the Davidson, I have to admit (a) still liking ELP after all these years, (b) having bought a copy of Brain Salad Surgery on CD to replace the vinyl and (c) playing it in my car. Events (a), (b) and (c) led to me forgetting that the CD was still in the autochager when taking my 14-year-old daughter somewhere. Not only did she like the album. but asked me to load it on to her i-pod! Thus it joins music by "Bullets for My Valentine" and the other metal bands that she listens to counterbalanced by the entire PA/CJ Live in Australia CD from 2002 and selected other PA/CJ tracks including I See The Joker and Carnations on the Roof from the CDs bought to replace the vinyl.

Though he had no great gifts of personality or mind, he was quite well respected.

| When I worked backstage at Northampton's Derngate theatre, the pantomime (produced by and starring Jim Davidson) took much its musical score from ELP tracks. The second half opened with the Sultan of Arabia singing "touch and go", and the curtain fell to "learning to fly". Confusingly, one of the scenes featured a song originally by ELO.
