Many thanks, Rob - will get on to that !

In the meantime, I hope that some of you who will be in the West London area on Thursday May 8 might be able to come to a fundraising concert that I am currently planning for that night (7.30pm).

The concert is being presented by the Giles Hart Solidarity Memorial Committee, with the Polish Social and Cultural Association (POSK), at the Jazz Cafe of the POSK centre in Hammersmith (238-246 King St, W6 - nearest Tube, Ravenscourt Park).

The aim is to raise funds for a memorial plaque in tribute to Giles Hart, a human rights campaigner who, at the age of 55, was among those killed in the July 7 London bombings. As you may have read in news reports and obituaries back in 2005, Giles had been a leading member of the Polish Solidarity Campaign, the main British non-party organisation that in the 1980s campaigned to encourage support for the Soviet bloc's first free trade union, Solidarnosc. Now Solidarnosc wants to show its gratitude for his work through a memorial plaque in London - and Giles's old colleagues from PSC (including me) have set up a committee that is arranging this and raising funds.

I will be joined in this performance by several talented young musicians - and the varied repertoire will range from Mozart arias through Chopin piano pieces to Noël Coward songs.

To save on administrative costs, we are asking people to pay on the door (£10 each) after reserving tickets in advance. The e-mail address for ticket reservations will be announced with our big publicity push in April. In the meantime, I'd be grateful if anyone considering coming along could send me a private message.

Very many thanks indeed for allowing me to publicise this event here,
Naomi

I'm planning to do a floor-spot at Walthamstow Folk Club this Sunday April 20 - not an Atkin/James number, mind you; and in any case I would not expect people to turn up just to hear me do one song.

But the act on the bill that night - now, they are worth hearing !! The veteran blues guitarist Simon Prager and the harmonica-player Rob Mason are both fantastic musicians, and make a dynamic duo, and it should be a very enjoyable evening.

As those who heard Pete at the club last year will confirm, it's a very nice venue.

And while I'm here, chaps, may I remind you about the fundraising concert that I'm doing in West London on Thursday May 8 (see above).

Many thanks for allowing this off-topic plug,
Naomi

See you on May 12 for Pete's gig, folks - in the meantime, may I remind you about the gig that I am doing this Thursday May 8 at the Polish Centre that's known as POSK (in the Jazz Cafe there) 238-246, King St, Hammersmith at 7.30pm.

The concert is being presented by the Giles Hart Solidarity Memorial Committee, with POSK, to raise funds for a memorial stone in tribute to Giles Hart, a human rights campaigner who was among those killed in the London bombings of July 7, 2005. Back in the 1980s, Giles was among Britain's leading pro-Solidarnosc campaigners - and the plaque, to be unveiled this July, will express the gratitude of Solidarnosc for his efforts.

As well as me, the performers include a superb baritone called Maciek O'Shea, and our repertoire ranges from operatic arias to cabaret. We'll also be joined by Katharine Blake, founder of the Mediaeval Baebes.

Tickets are £10 - cash or cheques, on the door. (Reservations can be made via a private message to me.)

Many thanks,
Naomi

Hello folks,

Here's a gig that you won't want to miss: the excellent Sarah Moule - who you will have heard duetting with Pete on his new CD - is appearing at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho (Dean Street) this Sunday evening, May 18, with Simon Wallace (piano), Mark Hodgson (bass) and Paul Robinson (drums). Proceedings begin at 7.30pm. It's one of the best jazz venues in London.

Having been fortunate enough to hear Sarah's set at Pete's recent Wavendon gig, I'd be in the audience in Soho myself this Sunday if I didn't have a work-shift then !

The Pizza Express Jazz Club website says that Sarah will perform "tracks from her outstanding new CD, ‘A Lazy Kind Of Love’ (Red Ram Records), which features insightful and incisive lyrics by the likes of Clive James and Julie Burchill".

With any luck, you'll hear Sarah's intriguing interpretation of "The Flowers and the Wine".

Although you can of course book online or over the phone or on the door for £17, if you contact Sarah beforehand, you'll get in for a nicely discounted £10.

For this reduced rate, please contact Sarah, preferably by 4pm on Saturday - or by Sunday lunchtime at the latest. Her e-mail address is:  smoule@btinternet.com

Hello all,

To celebrate the 80th anniversary this year of the epoch-making premiere* of Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera), by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, I have devised a Weill-Brecht concert called Threepenny Songs, which I'll be performing in Central London in the early evening of Tuesday December 2, with Stephen Rose at the piano.

I do hope that fellow MVs might be able to come along. Those who heard me sing at PoD in 2004 will recall Stephen's superb playing.

The concert, at Schott Music Ltd, 48 Great Marlborough St, London, W1 (near Oxford Circus Tube station), starts at 6.30pm. It will last about an hour.

Tickets, at the door (no advance booking): £7 (£5 concessions).

Hope to see you there !

Good luck, Naomi. I remember your 2004 oD performance well and would love to come but unfortunately have my own gig in Hastings to attend to. Another time.

Very many thanks, Leslie, that's great - see you there ! Hope you'll join us for a drink afterwards.

Am not sure if any other MVs (apart from me) will be there.

Toi. toi (as we operatic types say) for tonight in Hastings, Gerry - and thanks for those very kind words. Would love to hear you play sometime, too.

Can I just say what a pleasure it was to hear Naomi performing at Schott Music last week. Until a few years ago I thought that Mack the Knife was (only) a swing hit by Frank Sinatra and my newly-found appreciation of Brech/Weill is in no small measure thanks to hearing Naomi perform on several occasions.

Also attending was the inestimable Ms Sarah Moule and she hinted at a possible SM/PA collaboration in the new future. I look forward to more information from our Diety.

Many thanks for coming along, Leslie - and for those very kind words. And many apologies for not posting sooner to say so.
Four gigs later, in three weeks (incidentally, those gigs weren't public events, otherwise I would have plugged them here) - I have finally surfaced !

It was a delight, too, to see Sarah at Threepenny Songs - and, like Leslie, I will be eagerly looking out/listening out for the project with Mr A at which she hinted.

Incidentally, unless it is ruled otherwise, I am considering the gathering of the three of us to have been a sclonch.

So pleased to have contributed to your new-found appreciation of the work of Weill and Brecht, Leslie ! I would recommend the original 1930 recordings that Teldec made available again in recent years, in which the voice of the young Lotte Lenya is heard, "sweet, high, light, dangerous, cool, with the radiance of the crescent moon", to quote a 1935 article by Ernst Bloch on The Threepenny Opera.

I  am doing a Lieder recital in Central London on Saturday June 20 at 6.30pm which I hope will interest MVs.

The venue is Schott Music, 48, Great Marlborough St, London W1 - where Leslie and Sarah kindly came along to hear me sing Weill/Brecht last year.
Admission (on the door) is £7  (£5 concessions).

Nearest Tube is Oxford Circus.

I have devised a programme called Son of the Muses: settings of the poetry of J.W. von Goethe and Heinrich Heine by Franz Schubert - and also by other composers including Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn and 20th-century figures such as Hanns Eisler.  I'll be accompanied by the superb pianist Stephen Rose (who earned your plaudits when we appeared together at PoD in 2004).

The title is derived from Schubert's song of that name (a Goethe setting), Der Musensohn.

Later in the summer we'll be performing the programme for a gathering of the Schubert Institute, and the Schott date will be its first outing ! So it would be great if some pals could come along to the "premiere" !

Many thanks for allowing me to advertise it here !

Reminder: my "Son of the Muses" song recital is this evening (details above). I hope some MVs can get there.
The words of the great Tom Lehrer come to mind:
"As someone once remarked to Schubert - take me to your lieder."

At the Goethe-Institut London, in South Kensington, for the free music festival Exhibition Road Music Day, the pianist Stephen Rose and I will be performing Threepenny Songs - the celebration of Brecht and Weill's The Threepenny Opera which I devised back in 2008, and which Leslie M and Sarah M kindly attended when we performed it at Schott Music that December.

The programme of songs by Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler (with words by Bertolt Brecht - except that one song has words by Erich Kästner) will be largely the same as on that occasion - although this time I will be singing The Ballad of Mack the Knife (last time Stephen played it as a piano solo) and we will include Eisler's The Ballad of Marie Sanders.

The venue: Goethe-Institut London (in the library), 50 Princes Gate, London SW7 (S Kensington Tube)
Date and time: Sunday June 20, 3pm.
It's free ! There are many musical events - of many genres - that day at the Goethe-Institut and indeed all down Exhibition Road.

Here are the links, and NB - the pic of Stephen and me was taken at PoD04 by Mr Kelly (to whom many thanks !)

and

It would be very nice to see some fellow MVs there.
