Title: *oD or XoD?
Post by Leslie Moss on Today at 16:18
There I was thinking we'd christened these things XoDs a while back.

Can I just take this opportunity to express my disappointment that ToD has become PoD? I know that Pete says he's quite happy with either, and there is a certain something about a small intimate unplugged-type venue. But I'm sure that had we got the full complement, we could still have recreated that feel at ToD, perhaps by not making use of the stage and instead having a sort of theatre in the round.

The real concern is the lack of commitment by people to a date in the future. Heck, I bought tickets for December 2004 performances of the His Dark Materials trilogy at the NT thirteen months ahead and the cost of forgoing the tickets is way more than the relative peanuts of ToD.

If the consequence of moving to this message board is that the number of Voices drops radically, well I guess that means we've seen the last of the proper XoDs. But maybe those that stay are prepared to commit to some different events, perhaps linked to Pete's periodic performances - pre-concert meal for example, or group outings to the next tour of the Bare-Naked Ladies.

Wadyasay folks?

Could be argued that the 'dead weight' of MV (and I don't mean the committed lurkers who still read every message avidly, but those who junk their MV mail or spam-filter it without reading it, yet remain on the circulation list because they can't be bothered to resign) are the very ones who don't buy the records or attend the gigs. In which case the move (still only proposed, btw) would leave them behind and we'd emerge in a more healthy state. It may well generate more interest, if only because thread integrity should allow visitors more easily to skip the trivia and backbiting and cut to the interesting stuff. We should also be able to shake some of the 'private club' feel, which must alienate new members and inhibit them from joining in. Might be beneficial!

I think the lack of commitment is a real downer after all that's been achieved. Two pounds fifty was all it took to secure a place and with 500+ members, if everyone had paid that measly amount, regardless of whether they could attend or not, we could have had a 'proper' XoD, *if* that was the best way to go. So I don't think a change to this format will make much difference, people can't be bothered even with the old format. I've found I've posted more using the BBS. No idea why though :)

MV has always been a bit of a mixture of private club and open environment. I rather like the private club element, provided that we remain open to new voices (not just new Voices). Half the fun is seeing what someone you have either met or developed an opinion of has to say about e.g. a gig. If this puts people off, then I'm genuinely surprised. I see little evidence of excluding in-chat in postings by regulars.

BTW how many postings do I need before I get my second star?!

Call me Sir, you vagabond!

I have 2 stars now!

Ah, so twelve post gets you a second star eh? Methinks that our host has been tweaking the system to allow himself 5 stars on only 24 postings!

Incidentally, I've discovered that if you view the properties of an avatar, you can find out the website it's linked from, and hence in many cases the secret identity.

Good fun this eh? More scope for games than boring old email!

I feel a bit miffed that you've been discussing my event behind my back (i.e. before I was made aware of the existence of this forum)!

Sorry, Leslie, but it became obvious that to continue with the original ToD format would gave been an open invitation to financial disaster.  Don't worry too much, though.  We're not changing the propramme, only the venue.  Personally I hope that the smaller and more inimate venue will help to foster the participation aspect that has been remarked on as a feature of the earlier XoDs.  Pete himself has expressed hopes in this direction (to me personally at Eastbourne, and then on the list), using phrases along the lines of "open dialogue" and "living room atmosphere".

So don't think of it so much as a concert, more as a party with entertainment.  Come along in this spirit, and with a bit of luck we'll all have a good time.

I'm sure we'll have a brilliant time and you'll have created the 'good luck' for us Richard.

Now - considering I don't like online message boards I seem to be making a fair few replies don't I - working to get rid of my Newbie tag!!

Sorry Richard -- the forum wasn't intended to be secret, it just wasn't announced until after the first week-and-a-bit's trial, and I deliberately selected daily list members as my guinea-pigs -- Steve

It's all right, Steve, I was only joking.  I s'pose a smiley might have made that plainer, but I don't particularly care for them.

The smaller venue will give us greater intimacy and better suits my pertsonal relationship with the music.  I want lots of people to know and love the music but I want hear it in small rooms with small groups of people.  I am just as excited about PoD as I was about ToD.
