Title: FOR SALE (2) Pete's Yairi Virtuoso
Post by Pete Atkin on Today at 17:55
As part of my continuing attempt at simplifying my life a bit, and as I have explained in my recent Newsletter 0901, I’m selling a couple of my guitars, my Atkin OM (see separate thread) and my Yairi Virtuoso classical.   Ever since I acquired a nylon strung Taylor a few years ago, I simply no longer play it, and that seems a shame.
It is the guitar I bought new for thirty eight pounds in 1969 (it comes with the original receipt from Ken Stevens’ music shop in Cambridge).  It was my only guitar until I bought the Gibson jumbo.  Most prominently it’s the guitar I played exclusively on the ‘Beware of the Beautiful Stranger’ LP, and on “The Flowers And The Wine” and “Thief In The Night” on ‘Driving Through Mythical America’.
Having taken reliable advice, I think it’s currently worth about two hundred and fifty pounds, but  I’m guessing that there might possibly be some competitive interest in this from Midnight Voices, so I’m proposing something similar to what I did a few years back with the Gibson, that is to run an informal auction, inviting bids of £250 or more, with the amount by which the successful bid, if any, exceeds £250 going to The Parkinson’s Disease Society.
If you’re interested, please send me an Instant Message (click the link on the left) with any enquiries and/or a bid.  I will keep you informed privately by IM of the state of the bidding.  In other words, bidders’ identities and their bids will be known only to me.   Bidding will close at 1800GMT on Sunday 22 February 2009.  As with the Atkin OM I’m afraid I have to restrict this to pounds sterling and to UK purchasers, unless you can make your own arrangements.

Hi,

I've been lurking here a good while and have only been goaded (onwards) into revealing myself by the chance of owning PA's Yairi Virtuoso.

'nuff said, apparently I need 1 post before I can start bidding.

Well, this is it!

Do all guitars go up in value over the years or just certain ones? I bought mine (an Eros) back in 1973 for £40 and it's still going strong. I also have a banjo which I bought in about 1965 for 15 shillings (remember them?) plus 5 bob for the case. To raise the money I sold my only LP ("All Summer Long" by the Beach Boys.) I had it valued recently and found it was worth about 4000€.

I don't think there are any rules about it, Ian.  Some do, some don't.  There's no guarantee that an instrument is valuable simply because it's old.  And, as with many other artefacts, sometimes particular models or examples acquire a value that has nothing to do with their intrinsic qualities.   Things are finally only worth what someone is prepared to pay for them.

Well, it all got a wee bit hairy towards the deadline.  I now know how the Ebay computer must feel.  But the sale is now over and the Yairi is now en route, though as yet in only a virtual sense, to its new owner.  Many a thank to everyone who expressed an interest, and commiserations to all whose bids didn't finally make it.
