A extract from the latest press release from Jewish Book Week2011, reads as follows:

Quote:
We have invited the limpid French philosopher Pascal Bruckner who has written on a wide range of subjects from the unnecessarily guilt of the West to our futile pursuit of happiness, topics he will discuss with polymath extraordinaire and his biggest fan in the UK, Clive James.

Jewish Book Week takes place at the Royal National Hotel, Bedford Way, WC1H 0DG from Saturday 26 February to Sunday 6 March 2011

Tickets can be booked online www.jewishbookweek.com or by phone 0844 847 2274

I hope this gig is a reliable indication that Clive has recovered full independence after the hospital stay so graphically depicted in Vertical Envelopment.

I'm moved to read more of Pascal Bruckner, and am struck again (after too long away) by the quality of prose Clive has selected for his Website.

Thanks Kevin for spotting this.

Clive notes "The English translation, as provided by the excellent German online magazine Signandsight, retains too many of his original exclamation marks" and picks up the serves/served error (typo in the translation?) -- "Nicht genug damit, dass Großbritannien dem Dschihad jahrelang als Asylland gedient hat, mit den bekannten dramatischen Folgen." -- clear enough in the German. In fact even the Google translator version cuts more cleanly to  the core of what surely is Bruckner's intention. Clive knows, and we understand, the entire essay would have benefitted from the Jamesian interpretation...

8.30PM: Clives James, Pascal Bruckner

Clive James in conversation with Pascal Bruckner

Pascal Bruckner is not afraid of controversy. Original and unconventional, the author of The Tyranny of Guilt: An Essay on Western Masochism has garnered praise from Nick Cohen, Christopher Hitchens and, of course, the brilliant polymath Clive James. He came to fame as one of the “nouveaux philosophes” together with Bernard-Henri

Lévy, had a novel made into a film by Roman Polanski (Bitter Moon) and writes lucid prose.

Clive James – essayist, cultural commentator and memoir writer – has won numerous prizes, including the George Orwell Special Prize for lifetime achievement in journalism and broadcasting.

Expect a conversation which ranges from geopolitics to the politics of marriage, the blurred line between antisemitism and hatred of Israel, and the foolish pursuit of happiness.

Pascal Bruckner writes both fiction and non-fiction. His novel Bitter Moon was turned into the renowned film. His works of political philosophy include: The Temptation of Innocence and The Tyranny of Guilt.

Kevin is right: don't rely on getting a ticket on the night - you may not get in. It's a very popular festival. Book ahead.

Naomi,

I now realise that I've not made it very clear in my original posting that if you click on BUY A TICKET you'll find it's actually a link to the online ticket sales.

Apologies, Kevin et al, for my density on all matters high-tech. That stuff will never catch on, you know...

PS: On a separate matter - R4 broadcast a feature the other day on Completists. I didn't hear it closely so dunno if any MVs were interviewed ! Sorry but it's beyond my dinosaur capabilities to supply a link to the Listen Again page.

The word 'completist' was coined in the 1950s and was originally applied to collectors who aspired to own an entire set of records by a particular artist (usually a jazz musician). But now completists come in many different forms with different ambitions. Ian Marchant meets five "completists" - each of them driven by the need to tick off the entire collection.

The internet has revolutionised everything for this group dragging them out of their cellars, kitchens, bedrooms and sheds and into web forums, specialist chatrooms and onto the blogosphere to exchange opinions, tips and secrets with whole tribes of fellow completists. The opportunities to complete their goal are more available because of global communication but the logistics are harder and the goal posts are higher.

Ian Marchant, a former Charing Cross Road bookseller, is an old friend and admirer of completists. He recalls the story of one book collector who regularly asked for a particular volume habitually adding '...but you won't have it.' When the book (at last and amazingly) turned up, the collector refused to buy it because, once he owned it, he'd no longer have a reason to live.

Ian's completism? He owns all the records of Brinsley Schwarz. It took him ten years to find a copy of their first album and it turned out to be lousy.

Broadcast
Sun 23 Jan 201114:45 BBC Radio 4

The Completists Listen Again 5 days remaining.
