Very interesting but as usual not enough about the Pete connection. And what's all this about Pete's "folky music"? Memo to future singer-songwriters: do NOT play an acoustic guitar either on stage or on record if any other instrument is available if you wish to avoid being classed as "folk."

It's the old dilemma, Ian.  Clive gives such good value that of course every journalist wants to jump on the opportunity to get him to provide some great free copy, but they won't necessarily reciprocate by printing the stuff that he actually wants to talk about.  But while it's not quite true that all publicity is good publicity there is something to it, and keeping our names out there, however apparently modestly, does have use and value.  In this instance, Clive is of course talking about songs and music, and simply making that association is important, I think.

....or consider yourself as being as unclassifiable as Jacques Brel, maybe Leonard Cohen, or even Sheryl Crow.

Sheyrl Crow

PS.

Playing acoustic guitar did not do much harm to Jewel's career, did it?

MVs might like this appraisal of Ian Dury by a US-based history professor..........

Clive in 'Record Doctor' appearance

The re-release of the 70s canon appears to have been excuse enough for The Observer's Music Monthly to have Clive appear in their record doctor column:

Here's the first couple of lines, to whet appetites: "What is the name of the dreadful Gallagher brothers' band?" Clive James reclines on one of his three sofas, lights what remains of a miniature cigar and, not for the first time, unleashes a hacking cough."

The format, for those who find OMM depressing: music related personality complains about those things that depress them about music. Record Doctor sends some CDs to soothe their pain.Personality gives verdict. Don't think selection sent to Clive likely to impress him.

But the article, and interview, are good fun.

OK, it's a bad sign when you reply to your own post, but looking at the previous post I suddenly had this question pop into my head: what contemporary music would we have have sent to Clive, had we been the record doctor, that would have had better results?
