I've got no idea if this will work or not, but here goes.

Testing, testing...

I don't mind being a moderator if it helps!

Question: Is it still possible with this new set-up to be able to get all posts emailed to you as with the old MV?

Although it sometimes does mean inbox overload (not recently though) I prefer it because I don't have to make a conscious effort to log in to the webpage to keep up with the news.

Any answers appreciated, and hi to all!

Cheers and fingers crossed this typing isn't a waste of time.

Paul -- oops sorry, Secret -- If, and today it's looking increasingly like when, we switch over to this system, the old manual e-mail system will cease. It'll make life easier for me, and after all, the daily stuff hasn't been all that special recently, has it? You'll just have to get into the habit of checking each day for new posts or new threads.

However you can request e-mail notification (per thread) of replies posted -- click "Notify of replies" at the end of the thread, or use the checkbox directly beneath the editor text window when composing a message.

Hi Steve!

I'm more than flattered to be thought of as a possible musical Moderator and am more than willing to moderate musically if nobody else wants to. On the other hand, I would have thought that Gerry Smith or Ian S. (despite the latter's crush on Cliff Richard) would have been better adapted technically. Still, if you want me to, I'm all yours.

May I propose Colin as moderator for the Lyrics Analysis group?

The only problem I have with that is that if someone starts a fascinating new thread, I won't know about it unless I spend time browsing the forum to see what's new. I find that more time consuming than just downloading a bunch of emails and then quickly scanning them off-line to see what's of interest. I can always bin anything I find boring.

Is there a way that at least important announcements can be mailed out? For instance in Yahoo! groups the group owner or moderator can send out "important" emails to all subscribers, regardless of whether they've selected emails/no emails.

Sorry Steve - not wishing to pour cold water on the flashy new forum, but just trying to point out what I see as possible drawbacks to some members. I expect those with dial-up connections might not be as happy about having to go to the website to see what's new.

Does anyone else have any comments on the new forum itself? After all, I imagine that we ought to be doing that before it takes over from the old MV we know and love.

Cheers

I have a lot of trouble coping with these bulletin boards and find I can only cope when they are linked to notifying emails.
I realise that the whole thing is incredibly time consuming for Steve as it is and really will try
I wanted to quote Secret/Paul but couldn't quite work it out in the 2 mins available before they lock the building.
Is it possible to increase the limit in the summary on the initial page where it says something about viewing the last 10 messages?  If it covered more say 30 or even 50 then there would be an easy way to check what you'd missed even on new threads and I could set up my email to alert me to check each day.
I'm happy to moderate the Shrinks stuff.
Do we need a permanent continuing thread for the really important stuff especially time dependent such as "Pete's on the radio in 2 hours"

Use the 'Quote' link (top right in each message window) which will open a reply window with the original message quoted, inside quote formatting tags. You just need to edit out the bits you don't want quoted, then type your reply.

I'll look into modifying the code to do this (within reason, not to upset the dial-uppers). It might already be buggy, as I've never seen as many as 10 messages listed. Or they're timing out -- I'll check. Also, it may never get so busy that the 'new posts' icon next to each board isn't sufficient. I need to create some nice blue and red 'MV' icons to make the new stuff more apparent.

Thanks Jan. Please, others I've put forward as moderators for the various boards, don't be put off because someone's already volunteered for 'your' board. When I decide who should do what, I'd like to get a feel for willingness or enthusiasm.

I intend to make a "sticky" thread (like the 'New Forum' one) which will remain at the head of the board for just such eventualities. Then no longer will I circulate a message I've just got around to picking up, telling everyone the programme's half-way through (or just finished!)

OK, I've added a listing of the latest 25 messages, for the time being ('Information Summary' on the 'MV Home' page). Let me know what you think.

Jan covered a number of issues in her post, but she intended mainly to accept an invited moderatorship. My subsequent replies have addressed this, but also some of her other points, which answers arguably should have gone elsewhere. But in the interests of thread integrity we must be flexible, I think. I intend to open a new 'board' covering admin matters, and may in future direct discussions such as this to new threads there.

Happy to mod. I presume we'll agree some ground rules for acceptable/on-topic postings?

Yes sorry about that!
I realised that I was replying to a topic that should have been elsewhere but wasn't sure quite what to do and decided to reply anyway.

Hi Steve - thanks for suggesting me as moderator of the Gigs Forum.  I'd be quite happy to officiate in that capacity, or maybe the Music Forum.

I think I said somewhere that I was happy to help out and moderate the Julie Covington forum. I guess I should put it again under the 'official' thread. I was thinking of setting a similar forum up on the JC website (http://www.thebeautifulchanges.co.uk) since YaBB seems quite a good system. Instead of that it might be more appropriate to just link to the JC forum on MV ... anyone see any problems with that?

Shhhh Cary -- we mustn't call it the Julie Covington forum Smiley

Really, it seems perfectly reasonable to link from the JC Website to our 'Chums' board -- I guess Julie will be the No.1 topic there -- we've seen very little on MV so far about Dai Davies, Rob Buckman, Al Sizer and the rest (cue avalanche) so yes, please, go ahead. If it gets too big to be in 'Chums', it can always spawn a new board, forum even, on this site.

Yes, you offered to moderate on the 21st, so it's yours. Leslie also accepted his nomination, on the 24th -- I must try and share things out equitably, so I'll find another suitable command for him. Perhaps you'd like to kick off with a moderator's message?

I know Leslie asked that we should establish some ground rules for acceptable posting: I'm pretty flexible on this, and would be happy to let my trusted lieutenant mods decide, but it sounds to me like fair meat for a fresh thread -- perhaps someone would like to open a 'Mod rules' thread, under /Admin/Tech perhaps?

Whoops - now if you'd just extend the window of opportunity for editing to 1 1/2 hours I could correctly call it the 'Chums Board'
