Reminding the reader early on, and in a roundabout way, that the starting point of a critical essay about a writer should “…always be the subject’s gifts, and not his crimes” and that if “the subject did not possess the first, there would be no point discussing the second”, Clive has written and a long and though-provoking review Zachary Leader’s The Life of Kingsley Amis (Cape) for the current issue of The Times Literary Supplement It’s here for free, but I would bet against its disappearing behind a paywall in the near future.
