Title: Thirty Year Man
Post by Andy Love on Today at 11:37
Hi Chorus

Recently I've been attempting to plonk away at this song on my guitar and, just this morning, a little light has dawned on our Esteemed Moderator's transcription in that I've suddenly realised how to get the (C Bass) into the Bb chord.  Doh!

Now the next thing I need is for someone to kindly tell me how to make (for example) Eb into Eb+.  Due to my scant knowledge of music theory it's no good, I'm afraid, saying things like "well, you just sharpen the 9th" : you've got to tell me straight the contortions necessary to get my fingers into the right places!

Here's hoping ...

Cheers

Andy

Eb+ is a horrible chord for guitarists. If you take Eb as xx5343, the Eb+ would be xx5443, assuming that you play the G which I can't quite manage. (The numbers represent the fret your fingers should be on and the xs the strings you shouldn't play starting of course from the bottom E, of course.)

No doubt someone will shoot me down in flames but I think that's right. Hope it helps anyway.

No doubt someone will shoot me down in flames, but shouldn't you be playing
Thirty Year Man on a piano, Andy?  ;D

I'll get me (fireproof) coat...

Cheers

Dear MoM

Well, this is roughly how I decide:  I look at the number of fingers I've got to fret with, subtract the pinky which often doesn't want to co-operate, and compare the resulting number with that which seems to be required to play each of the instruments available to me.  As three is closer to six than it is to eighty-eight, it's no contest, really.  Of course, the fact that I can't get a tune out of a piano at all (the black ones mean 'don't play' right?) is of some importance.

I'll have a bash at Ian's suggestion later, when the preparatory injection takes effect.  Thanks Ian.

Cheers

Andy

Andy, I had a quick look at this. Assuming you play the Eb with fingers as follows:
[font=Courier New]
String Fret Finger
4             5     4
3             3     1
2             4     3
1             3     2

I find it easier when switching to Eb+ to swap the 1st and 2nd fingers, leaving the other 2 fingers where they were, as follows:

String Fret Finger
4             5     4
3             4     2
2             4     3
1             3     1

(Bah! No matter how many spaces I put in, I can't get them freakin' columns to line up proper!)  >:(
I hope that makes sense - if not, then no doubt I'll be shot down in flames...

It may take a bit of practice to do it quickly, but let us know how you get on.

Cheers

Paul
