Just came across this on Facebook: beautiful but I still think it should be played in3/4 rather than 4/4.

Fiona Egan’s New CD Launch
Show Time 8:30pm / Doors Open 7:00pm

Award-winning vocalist Fiona Egan is a rising star on the London jazz scene, having performed at venues across the UK (inc. Vortex, Jazz Café, Pizza on the Park) and New York (Iridium, Lenox Lounge, Cleopatra’s Needle).

Being born into a large Irish family, singing was a way of life, making her passionate about lyrics and storytelling above all else. A classically trained singer and pianist, her musical journey took her through folk music, opera and dance music, but it was in the spontaneity and freedom of jazz that she found her true voice.

Equally comfortable with classic standards and quirky reinterpretations of modern pop and rock, Fiona effortlessly blurs genre boundaries, often with surprising results. Her articulate, understated style has led to comparisons with Blossom Dearie and Julie London.

CD Launch - "Touch Has a Memory": Unique and surprising arrangements of classic songs, from the American Songbook to the present day. Let us take you on a journey from Hoagy Carmichael to The Kinks, The Doors, and Portishead. Fiona’s precise and expressive vocals on this debut album display an impassioned love of the lyrics and the stories they tell, with a twist of dark humour.

Accompanied by a superb quartet of Bill Mudge (piano), Nick Kaçal (double bass), Milo Fell (drums/perc) and Paul Jordanous (trumpet).

I don't like to be negative about anyone's honest artistic endeavour but this version of Touch Has A Memory left me colder than cold. It just crawls along with no atmosphere or momentum. Pete's version is just so much better; in fact I can't think of a cover version  of any of his songs which is better than the real thing...just an opinion... Happy New Year to all.

I agree. Totally lacking in atmosphere and very uninspiring. Good to see such a great song getting some publicity though.

It may be worth saying that Fiona Egan's version of THAM sounds hugely better on CD than it does on MP3.  It's sadly a great example of how much is lost in the transfer - seven eighths of the information, I think (I'm sure there are many out there who can confirm or correct).  In this case it seems to have meant the loss of a great deal of clarity in the bass, which means a great loss in the harmonic shape.  The album is worth a listen anyway for FE's thoughtful and interesting avoidance of the obvious in how she approaches both classic songs and unpredictable choices of modern songs.
