Don't know where this goes so I'll put it here! Not sure when this picture came to light or if people will have seen it ..... if not here it is now. Clive and chums including Pete from 1969 Footlights. http://www.footlights.org/gallery/1969

Presumably a cast photo. Perhaps Pete could fill us in on the details.

'Chums' seems just the right place for this thread!

I assume that the figure back-left is our hero (that, or there were two Mexican bandit moustaches in Footlights at the same time!).

I think that the 2nd from the right in the back row is David Lund.  He was my English teacher at school and introduced me to, among other things, Pete.  David was in charge of the newly-built school theatre (innovatively called the "New Theatre"), where I worked on and later ran the technical side (sound and lights - now you know where I started running sound desks).  We had concerts/plays/films/cabarets almost every Thursday night, and Pete played one of these nights at least once a year.

Alongside his teaching and school theatre duties, David found the time to write radio scripts with his brother Peter, and even, I think, provided jokes for "I'm sorry I'll read that again"!  He was a jazz fanatic, and regularly brought some of the greats to play at school, and some of those concerts were broadcast on the BBC.  There was even have a "Jazz at the New Theatre" LP.  David also introduced me to alcohol (he always invited a couple of us to the BBC Jazz Club Christmas party, held at White City,  always on the night that the Christmas Top of the Pops was recorded, and where licensing laws didn't seem to apply to innocent 15-year-olds at the BBC bar), to stage nudity (again, those innocent 15-year-olds, at the Roundhouse to see a French cabaret troupe, if my shocked memory serves) and to green tea (well, how was I to know you weren't supposed to put milk in it!).  All in all a great bloke.

Simon fails to mention that David is credited as musical director of Supernatural Gas .

David and his brother's most notable foray into scriptwriting came in 1970 when they were part of a team of writers which wrote material for the now forgotten but quite successful ITV religious satirical revue Beyond Belief.

Beyond Belief was, as I recall it, moderately funny, and it certainly brightned up the very dreary Sunday afternoon "God Slot" no end.

My main reason for recalling it now is that Carmel Cryan (probably best known, if known at all, as the wife of the late Roy Kinnear), an actress to whom I'm very often wrongly, as far I know, presumed to be related, joined the cast for the second series.

Her joining the show brought with it the usual questions about whether or not I'd watched my relation on the box, or if I approved of one of the family sending up religion in that particular way, and so on and so on. Because the programme did on occasion upset the likes of Mary Whitehouse, I now have to admit that, depending on who was asking the questions, I was sometimes economical with the truth in my answers. I may even have left them a questioner with the impression that family pride prevented me for doing anything other than defending Carmel's contribution to the programme.

All I can say is that Robert Orledge looks like Dave Lund!

There is still a University College School link to the picture - Rob Buckman also appeared at the New Theatre, with Chris Beetles, doing a 2-man sketch show.  I'm pretty sure that one or other of them also went to the school in their youth.

Well spotted Jan. Nice little Clive anecdote with it too.

Yes, well, as always, the facts have become a bit skewed with the years.   It wasn't strictly a Footlights show so much as a spin-off.  I guess I must have been involved at some point, but I don't remember much about it.  I do remember that in one year -- probably 1967 -- Clive did a two-man show with Tony Buffery (second left in the pic), who had been part of the 1963 Footlights show "Cambridge Circus" which featured John Cleese, Tim Brooke-Taylor,  Bill Oddie, and David Hatch, but who as a committed graduate student had not gone with it on its professional tour to the West End and elsewhere.  He was -- probably still is -- an astonishingly funny man not least physically, and I know that Clive always admired him no end.  On the far right of the picture is Jonathan James-Moore (president of Footlights in 1968, who died at the end of 2005), so that would seem to reinforce some kind of Footlights connection.  I have no recollection of the Olivier incident, so I guess that must have happened during the James-Buffery show's run.

That link no longer seems to work. However, if you go to the Footlights homepage at

http://www.footlights.org/

you can then click on "Alumni" and see several decades' worth of roll-calls of the Footlights glitterati and several pictures. Makes fascinating reading. (BUT - the list of "famous alumni" on the alumni page includes CJ but NOT PA! I think we should complain!)

Cary may able to confirm but I think the photo shown here in the Fools rush in section is the same as the one she referred to:

Well, if it's the same photo that Pete gave us the roll-call for, Clive isn't actually in it ... so why does the caption say "Clive James at the Footlights garden party"? (And anyway, none of them look like Clive ... is this typical Footlights humour?)

Same picture indeed. And I'm sure that is CJ reclining - I think the flower must have fooled Jim. Looks like there are lots more interesting items in the Footlights archives.

Actually I think it's the quiff that fooled me. Or is he wearing a wig? I can see that the bottom half of the face is Clive-shape, but it somehow seems to go on a bit too far at the top!

Anyway, I have now finished North Face of Soho, and eventually came to the bit where the name Rudolph Regulus appears, although I think it appears with reference to a pseudonym used for one of his newspaper articles - there is no reference to Footlights, which by then was long gone, of course. (Can't find it again of course - this book needs an INDEX!)
