Whoever is maintaining the site has not picked up that it's Ralph Salmons on drums and percussion, not Roy Dodds.

This will probably make no difference to the people who are going to the gig to see Pete, but it could be very disappointing for those who go for the sole purpose of hearing Mr. Dodds play,  or for those who may be deprived of an opportunity of hearing Mr. Salmons because they find out too late that he's on the bill.

Hi, Jan.

My old French teacher, whom I tracked down after thirty-odd years, lives in the village of Sherington, a few miles from Wavendon. There is a very nice pub there with rooms in a converted barn where I have stayed. It's not cheap but very pleasant. Sauf erreur, it's whitehartsherington.co.uk

Hope all is well and sorry I'll miss the gig.

There is a Premier Travel Inn just off the A5 one junction north of the roundabout at the south side of Milton Keynes.  It's about 2 miles from Wavendon and a straightforward route to it.

It's the Milton Keynes South hotel on the www.premierinn.com website.

Look forward to seeing folks there.

Thanks Keith and Colin for the hotel suggestions. The Premier Travel Inn looks pretty convenient although Keith's suggestion looks lovely, (I'll probably use that one if my husband decides he's coming with me).

Event of the Year [Re: The Stables]

I hope everyone here has done his or her best to clear Friday April 4th, and that a great many of you are now in possession of tickets for this high-profile gig. This looks like being the closest we'll come to an MV Event this year, unless I'm missing something. The venue is well placed (on the edge of Milton Keynes) for access by all, being near the Nation's population centroid and right on the motorway network.

Are there any plans for a pre-gig Voices gathering? The 'sclonching' tradition is in need of a boost up the bum -- if any informal groups are in the process of forming, it would be good to announce it here with a view to amalgamation -- should be a great opportunity to catch up with fellow members in person and share gossip.

Alternatively, it could be the perfect occasion to invite your never-quite-convinced (or even 'never-heard-of-him') friends along to see in person what all the fuss is about.

Most of all, here's a rare chance to hear Pete at his 21st-Century best, with a 4-piece jazz-inflected band, and possibly even a little harmonic support from (MV member) Sarah Moule.

Tickets are still available, direct from The Stables, Wavendon. See you there!

Hello,

Yes please. I've been trying to answer direct but my messages keep coming back marked "Cancel send" or "done but with error on page", so I don't know whether it's gone through or not. Is it just this ancient machine / ancient user?

Hello Nedd,

You'll have seen my IM reply to your IM, but for the sake of others in doubt:

"Cancel Send" isn't an error message, it's a normal option, available for messages in your Outbox which you've posted but they haven't yet been opened by the recipient. Perhaps Jan hasn't yet picked up that one? When she does, the 'closed' envelope graphic changes to an 'open' one, and the 'cancel send' option disappears.

The usual reasons for 'send error' messages are mailboxes having reached their storage quota. Your Outbox can hold 50 IMs and your Inbox 100, so it's a good idea to clear out the old ones once in a while, either by deleting them or moving them to your Store, which can hold 2000 messages.

Get back to me by IM if you're still having probs...

Midnight Voices is experiencing a flush of new members today, perhaps as a result of the Guardian story "My Life in Lyrics -- Clive James" (see this post).

Time for a reminder (to bring the subject back onto our 'Recent Posts' list, at least) of the big concert coming up this very Friday at the Dankworths' home theatre, the Stables at Wavendon, Milton Keynes. This is the perfect opportunity to make (or renew) your acquaintance with the songs of Pete Atkin and Clive James. Tickets can be bought on line, here, and good seats are still to be had in front stalls and the balcony.

I hope to meet some of you there!

I'm really sorry to have to say that Alan Barnes has had to pull out of Friday's gig.  We're not going to attempt to replace him, so it'll be just me (and Sarah M) and the trio.

I'm sorry to say that I will be unable to attend The Stables gig later today, but here's hoping that you all have a fabulous evening. I'll look forward to reading the reviews.

Despite my non-attendance, I would echo Pete's disappointment that Alan Barnes is unable to appear. He is a truly awesome saxophonist (as well as clarinettist and flautist) and has been described as the best sax player this country has ever produced.

Hi folks. I'll be there together with my sister Shirley - we have both been deserted by our spouses this evening. Shirley has never heard Pete perform so go easy on her! She has a vague recollection of hearing me play PA albums in her teens (she's six years younger than me) but only really remembers Honky Tonky Train as I perform it incessantly at family celebrations.

I echo Steve's comment about a slonch (spelling?). We are leaving Edgware by car at 6.15 and - Friday night traffic on the M1 permitting - hope to arrive by 7.30 latest. Is there an obvious bar to gather at? We won;tbe able to make dinner but certainly I'd like to meet up with friends old and new before (and after too?) the gig.

Can I be the first to say what a great night last night was! It was the first time I have ever heard Pete perform with any backing - I never saw him with the band in the seventies and missed both the St George's and Newbury concerts last year. So this was a real treat.

The songs really come to life with a sympathetic accompaniment. Simon Wallace's piano-playing is extraordinary, and his deep jazz understanding gave songs like Thirty year Man an authentic touch. No time now for a proper review. but let me list the songs I remember Pete performing, in no particular order:

Honky Tonk Train (encore)
Empty Tables
BOTBS
Perfect Moments
Be Careful when they offer you the Moon (with Sarah Moule)
Touch has a Memory
Laughing Boy
Sessionman Blues
Payday Evening
Screenfreak
Between Us there is nothing
Senior Citizens
Thief in the Night (sans guitar)
Faded Mansion
Thirty Year Man

May be others which have escaped me (no pen!) but I'm sure other attendees can fill in.

As always, a pleasure to see fellow Voices - Alan, Naomi (hope you got home okay), Steve, Carole, Alexis, Andy, Janice, Sylfest et al.

And let me not end without giving due credit to Sarah Moule's great opening set, include PA/CJ composition The Flowers and the Rain, which in her words remains unrequited love but this time by the wife who married the wrong guy. Sarah has a wonderful voice and I particularly loved the Wallace/Landesmann songs. Bought the album too!

And my sister really enjoyed the concert too - another MV Vol 1 sale!

I agree with Leslie - a real treat. Pete was in fine form and it's marvellous to hear the songs with such accomplished backing. Although the venue was by no means full (someone mentioned it being the start of half-term) the audience was very enthusiastic.

May I just single out for special mention the ab fab piano playing of Simon Wallace? He's just so good. I especially liked his playing on Payday Evening - it really jazz-rocked in the middle bit - and the intro to Laughing Boy was to-die-for too.

Good to meet up with all the usual suspects, more attended than I had expected to see, and especially good to see Frankie Gunningham there.

More please...soon!

Amazing professionalism from substitute drummer Ralph Salmins. I learned from Simon W that they'd had no rehearsal time before Ralph arrived at the Stables last night, less than 3 hours before the performance. He didn't miss a beat!

And I thought I'd spotted a slight grin at some of the lyrics too, as if he'd not heard them before.

Sorry about the misspelling of Ralph's name on the SF Website, BTW. I've fixed it now -- Sarah Moule mentioned she'd given us a plug on her site, which is where I saw the correct version.

Oh yes, and we just simply must have more Atkin/Moule harmony singing!

Sarah Moule opened the proceedings, I enjoyed her set very much. The items were taken from her new CD A Lazy Kind of Love plus two standards:

1.  I love the life I live and I live the life I love (Willie Dixon)
2.  A lazy kind of love (Burchill/Landesman/Wallace)
3.  I was lost  (Landesman/Wallace)
4.  That old black magic (Arlen/Mercer)
5. I will write my book (Joe Henry)
Sarah mentioned that she's been introduced to this song by Pete Atkin
6. I fall in love too easily (Styne/Cahn)
7. Secret of silence (Landesman/Wallace)
8. The flowers and the wine (Atkin/James)
This was the really interesting one for MVs. As she sang the first line (correct me if I've got this wrong):
Another night you've been to visit me and him comes to an end.
you wondered how this was going to work. It did work beautifully, turning the song inside out and adding a whole load of possible new interpretations. Leslie has just mentioned one possibility. I would suggest another, the partner's friend, invited initially because he's lonely, new to the area, ... You could even link it to Get it out of your head
You'll just have to buy the CD to see what you think!
9. Devil may care (Dorough/Kirk)

After the interval we heard Pete's set which was made up mainly of songs from the new CD, typically many of them sounded interestingly different from the recorded tracks. The set also included a couple of unexpected items:

1.  Perfect moments
2.  I wouldn't hear a word against the Spring.
Very suitable for a jazz trio.
3.  Thief in the night
4.  Between us there is nothing
Lovely as usual
5.  Sessionman's blues
6.  An empty table
7.  Beware of the beautiful stranger (Guitar + bass)
8.  Senior citizens
9.  I've got me to thank (Guitar)
Gosh! Its depressing!
10. Payday evening
11. Touch has a memory
12. The faded mansion on the hill
13. Screen freak
This one was absolutely perfect.
14. Laughing boy
The intro to this was so good that I thought I'd guessed the title wrongly and nearly crossed it out.
15. Thirty year man
16. Be careful when they offer you the moon (with Sarah Moule)
17. The original original honky tonk night train blues

Its good to hear these songs with the piano, bass and percussion. Clive has commented in the past that working with Pete they produced something, with the songs, which neither could have produced alone and when musicians of the calibre of Simon Wallace are added then the result is even more interesting because they don't keep rigidly to a score but make their own contributions.

If you weren't able to get to Wavendon then try to get to: 606 Club Chelsea on Monday May 12th

It was nice to meet up with Leslie, John, Naomi, Alan, Andy and Kevin as well as Nedd, Carole, Alexis and Steve.

BTW Sarah Moule's CD also includes Pete Atkin singing harmony vocals on one track 'Living In Overdrive'
