Title: DOCUMENTARY: Rebels of Oz Post by Cary on Today at 21:05 This just spotted .... DOCUMENTARY: Rebels of Oz On: BBC 4 (9) Date: Tuesday 8th July 2014 (starting in 12 days) Time: 21:00 to 22:00 (1 hour long) VideoPlus: 34156 Germaine, Clive, Barry and Bob. Author and unashamed Australia admirer Howard Jacobson sets out on a journey of discovery into how Robert Hughes, Clive James, Barry Humphries and Germaine Greer left the backwater of Australia and became towering forces in the cultural epicentres of London and New York. Howard charts the ascent of the four rebels to national and international icons. Clive and Germaine take Cambridge by storm, whilst Barry finds his feet with Private Eye and Robert absorbs the culture of Italy. Before long, all are high profile figures - Clive as a journalist, Germaine confronting the world with The Female Eunuch, Barry unleashing Dame Edna and Bob becoming Time Magazine's most astringent art critic. Yet, as their stars were rising in Britain and the US, their reception at home was becoming more frosty. Title: Re: DOCUMENTARY: Rebels of Oz Post by John N L Morrison on 17.07.14 at 12:57 Watched much of the first episode and the initial ten minutes of the second, but was eventually totally put out by Howard Jacobson's "me, me, me" approach. Quite unprofessional to make what could have been an interesting programme about 4 Aussies and turn it into a lot of self-obsessed gurning to camera. A sadly missed opportunity. |

Title: Re: DOCUMENTARY: Rebels of Oz Post by Murray McGlew on 08.10.14 at 12:11 They showed it recently out here under the name Brilliant Creatures. I enjoyed a lot of the old footage, most of which I hadn't seen before, but a lot of the opinions and comments from the people themselves have appeared in various forms over the years. |
