The Lamb in Eastbourne Old Town has recovered from its fire sufficiently to be able to host Nick Westcott's historic folk club once again, no longer in that room at the top but now in the refurbished function room on the first floor where Nick says the acoustics are better and where there's a bit more room (and a shorter trip up the stairs) and Nick has very kindly asked me back on January 21st.  More details in due course, I'm sure.

Fantastic, a local PA gig. It's been a long time. Good to hear EFC is back up and running but won't miss the room at the top of the stairs! Date's in the diary.

Just revisiting John Martyn's Solid Air. Bloody marvellous.

Brings back memories. The first time I heard Eye of the Universe was in that small room at the top of the stairs about eight years ago.

I also got done by a speed camera while driving back home through the South Downs at about midnight - reet pissed off I was too!

I've got Jan 21st in my diary for a revisit.

Regretably I'm going to have to give Eastbourne a miss after all. My Dad (92!) was taken into hospital at the weekend and is expected out tomorrow afternoon - I  need to be there to pick him up and get him sorted back home.

Look forward to hearing about the gig from you lucky folk.

PS Gerry I've signed the live music petition so am not bothering with the Facebook group. Having organised several public events in recent years, I am totally frustrated with the ludicrous restrictions of the Licencing Act and have now taken to ignoring the rules and keeping my fingers crossed - hardly ideal!

Thanks for signing the petition. It really does seem as though this government is hell bent on stopping anyone from having a good time.  Why would anyone want to go to a pub? It's now enormously expensive to drink, you can't smoke and there's a swelling tide of restrictions on entertainment. Check out Green & Co's website - they're virtually giving pubs away! [/rant].

I urge anyone concerned about the future of live entertainment, and I think that includes all MV's, to sign the No10 peteition: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/NoNoiseControl/

Sorry we won't be seeing you in Eastbourne. I'll post a review.

I tried to sign up but I couldn't as the organizers don't seem to have thought that British non-residents not living in Gibraltar or the Pitcairns would be interested.

Feel a bit hypocritical signing anyway as I'm currently involved in a campaign to stop the local authority building a Formula One racetrack half a mile away from my weekend hideout complete with motorway exit. Clive's a big F1 fan: I wonder what he'd say if they built a circuit in his backyard?

Well, it was another good night in Eastbourne. Playing to a packed house of around 70 and with standing room only Pete played a set of 15 songs on the Atkin guitar. No amplification, just Pete and his guitar in a large room, not entirely suited to the purpose of a gig it must be said, being rather narrow and long with chairs tightly packed together in four rows of about 15 or so. Despite being troubled by a fairly large frog in his throat, Pete soldiered on right to the end only giving out on the high notes a couple of times.  And as with Walthamstow, the piano stayed at home.

I must admit to having some misgivings about this, especially as I enjoy Pete's piano playing. But I needn't have worried. Even piano numbers such as Sessionman's Blues and Thirty Year Man sounded great on the guitar. Pete took the former down to E from its native F to make it easier on the fingers and the latter, to me, in places, sounded like a  new song. The set list was:

Many Thanks for the review / set-list Gerry -you deserve your gold star from Janice  :)  A good mix up on the songs - this guy doesn't just do the same set does he?  At W'stow Sunlight Gate on guitar was something to behold (...with your ears - oh dear shall I start again?). Anyway thanks for the report - much appreciated!

In fact, with the exception of MV Dr Martin Howell, whom I was sitting next to, I didn't recognise anybody!  Then again, working in this blasted IT malarkey has wrecked my eyesight. Hey ho...

Sorry, I'm afraid the chubby bloke with the grey beard was me.   Thanks so much, Gerry, for your generosity and attention, not to say attendance.  I scarcely recognised you owing to your own un-chubbiness.  And a big thank to Nick Westcott, who must easily win the prize (if there is one) for the person who's been booking me the longest.  He showed me some photos afterwards taken at one of the very first Eastbourne gigs in the '70s.   I shall discreetly not mention either hair or chubbiness at this point (mine and others').

Glad you liked the way I've been doing Sunlight Gate, Seán.  I think I've just about sorted it out - slightly different rhythm and tempo and a bit more space around the first couple of lines of each verse.  One for Songbook Vol.2, I think.  And yes, it's been a handy exercise trying formerly exclusively piano songs on guitar. Maybe I should try some the other way around some time.  (I did once do Beautiful Stranger on piano after I broke a guitar string, and it still seemed to work OK.)

Well, you're certainly seeing less of me these days, about six stone less at the last count and still going! Thanks again for the unplugged performance. It's sometimes good to hear the songs 'in the raw' without all the electronic clutter.  Looking forward to April in Hove. ( I bet Ian C wishes it was April in Paris!)

He's not the only one - 4th April is our wedding anniversary, and we are going away for the weekend, probably to Paris!  (last year Newbury, this year Hove - at some point there will be a gig near Hampshire which *doesn't* clash with an anniversary!)

Well, Jan, I think some of those are destined to stay on that list, and my guess is you can probably make a fair stab at a majority of them.   Rattlesnake Rock came up simply because I had had to listen to Live Libel again for the first time in a very long time indeed to check the master for the reissue, and it made me laugh, so I thought, well, if it still made me laugh it might earn its place.

Yes, there are only two from that list I would like to hear some time, With her it goes deeper and Daughter of the sun. Time and time again has one beautiful line in the lyrics but otherwise is a bit ... well repetitive.

The list of songs which have been sung only once is much more interesting

Sadly I did not collect my father on Eastbourne evening to take him home from hospital. He took a turn for the worse and died in the early hours, aged 92 and surrounded by his family. We have just emerged from a week of "shiva" - mourning and prayers following his funeral last Sunday.

Hope to see some of you at a future gig.
