Orwell prize spoilt for choice
27.03.08 Anna Richardson

Seven authors are in contention for the Orwell Prize for books, after the judges were forced to extend the shortlist.

Nick Cohen's What's Left?, Jay Griffiths' Wild, William Hague's William Wilberforce, Ed Husain's The Islamist, Marina Lewycka's Two Caravans, Raja Shehadeh's Palestinian Walks and Clive Stafford Smith's Bad Men all made it onto the list, when the judges decided to opt for seven books instead of the usual six, because the "range and intensity of the writing made it so difficult to choose".

At a debate yesterday evening (26th March), the judges also revealed the shortlist for the award's journalism category, with journalists coming from the Independent, the Observer, the Daily Telegraph, the Economist and the BBC, including cultural commentator Clive James.

Chair of judges, Jean Seaton, said: "Watching the judges select a shortlist from the longlist was painful: anybody who thinks that political thought is weary should pick up one of the books from the longlist or browse some of the journalism."

The winners will be announced at the Foreign Press Association on 24th April.

The Winner of the Journalism prize

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Orwell is a hero and a model whom we vainly strive to imitate. To be associated with his name, as an Orwell Prize winner, is not just an honour but also a call to action.
Timothy Garton Ash, Journalism Winner, 2006

Johann Hari – The Independent

Columnist and reporter, The Independent

For five articles.

Johann Hari has been a twice-weekly columnist for The Independent since January 2003, and a Contributing Editor to Attitude (Britain's main gay magazine). Since 2005 he has also written a weekly 'City Lives' column for the Evening Standard, London's nightly newspaper.

His writing has appeared in the New York Times. the Los Angeles Times, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Le Monde, El Mundo, The Guardian, The Melbourne Age, the Sydney Morning Herald, South Africa's Star, The Irish Times, Amnesty International's journals and a wide range of other international newspapers and magazines. He has also written a play, Going Down in History (2002), and a book, God Save the Queen? (2003).

Clive seems to have won too (though this isn't mentioned on the Orwell Prize site).  The Guardian has:
Quote:
Hari won for his "courageous reporting" and "forceful writing" in the Independent, while James was presented with a special award for writing and broadcasting.

Well done to both of them!

Actually, it is mentioned. It's just that the the special award was posted after I'd stopped monitoring the site.

Special Awards

2008

Clive James was awarded a Special Prize for Writing and Broadcasting after being shortlisted for the Journalism Prize 2008.

He has been a staple of British screens, airwaves and publications since the early 1970s. A writer, poet, essayist, broadcaster and commentator, he has written for the Listener, the New Statesman, the Review, The Observer, The Guardian, the LRB, the Spectator and the Times Literary Supplement. He has presented (and created) television programmes including Fame in the 20th Century, Clive James’ Postcard from... and Clive James on Television. He was shortlisted for this year’s Orwell Prize for Journalism for three editions of A Point of View on BBC Radio 4.

Chair of the Orwell Prize, Professor Jean Seaton, said: ‘Clive James is a master, in the Orwell tradition, of the essay. Whether written or broadcast his words are sharp but humane.’

John Hari on Clive James

....

James is not really battling against cultural amnesia*. No: he is fighting against cultural diabetes, the sickness that afflicts a culture when our diet consists of nothing but the sugar-stimulants of television and video games and lads' mags. He is showing his readers that there are far richer rewards in the slower work of "the life of the mind", and he offers one of the best shots of insulin available.

Clive James on John Hari

"..........

Although he holds certain political opinions that I don't share — he was careful to point these out in case I had forgotten them — I thought his reaction to my book* was a good part of the reward for having written it.

To inspire such keen interest in a bright young person is surely part of my mission when dusk falls on the glittering city and I don the tightly fitting costume of the caped cultural critic to go swinging high above the teeming streets on the lookout for fallacious arguments to counter and damsel-like humanist values to rescue from durance vile.

Now that journalist Johann Hari is handing back his 2008 Orwell prize, one wonders whether or not it will be passed on to another nominee of that year. If it is, then it's very unlikely that Clive James will be the in the running. The fact that he was given a "special" prize would, I imagine, rule him out.
