The Whisper by Mark Mansfield * No deep sworn vow by us was ever worn away. No fighting and no fuss, chance made a holiday into a dream we shared. No heart strings tugged or frayed. Life never interfered nor drug its feet of clay. A modicum of tears spared any need to say however much we cared, neither cared to stay. Yesterday near dusk I passed along the pier and stopped for nothing but to watch day disappear, then turning, felt you there although you’ve been gone for years. * In his post of May 11th, 2015, the late Gerry Smith quoted this poem without attribution, which might have unintentionally implied he was claiming it as his own work. In fact the author was Mark Mansfield, who writes (18.04.26) "The poem appeared in 2008 in my debut collection, Strangers Like You and is titled 'The Whisper.' It was originally published in 2004 in the journal, Songs of Innocence (and Experience). That collection has since gone into a second edition by Chester River Press in 2018 and is available online." « Footnote added by admin, 20.04.26 »
