Smiley suppression

Is there any way to suppress smileys for all future message writing? I see that it can be done on a post by post basis but I want to switch smiley generation off for all my posting. I cannot find this switch in the Profile section (where I would expect it to lurk).

No, I don't have a global anti-smiley setting. I think if you avoid certain unusual combinations of punctuation marks you'll not inadvertently generate one, and you can always Preview your post before sending, to make sure the evil icons haven't snuck in!

I think the 'disable smileys' switch is mainly intended for those posting program code, where you don't want syntactically valid character sequences to be converted to silly grins! Grin

I had one generated by the end of the ISBN : eight-right parenthesis yields 8). Mutter.

That's an easy one to fall into -- perhaps I should change the code for that one.

[Later] This should do it. Now your ISBN'll have to include "" if it's to generate that emoticon when you don't want it.

Hi, emoticonophobes and emoticonophiles!

Sorry about that. When I launched the forum I modified the "huh" smiley so that innocent entry of the "???" glyph wouldn't automatically invoke an unintended Huh icon. I did that by changing the code from "???" to "<colon>huh<colon>" (by <colon> I mean you should type the colon character). And in order that users wouldn't need to remember this, I also changed the code associated with the Huh icon in the message composition window to send this same sequence: those clicking on the icon would see "<colon>huh<colon>" appear in their text, but on previewing or posting it would be translated to Huh.

A while later, Theo entered an ISBN ending in 8, in parentheses. The final digit and the closing bracket were rendered Cool. Of course, he could always have checked "disable smileys", but he might not have realised he needed to, and in any case that action doesn't survive a repeated preview or a quotation. So I simply disabled interpretation of the "8)" combination. I totally forgot what I'd done with "???" to keep the icon link working -- I'd become an emoticonoclast!

Today I've rediscovered my "???" solution and applied the same fix to "8)". Clicking on the Cool icon now inserts the sequence "<colon>cool<colon>" into your message, which is interpreted as Cool. Typing "8)" just gives you "8)".

Be cool! Cool

Ah, but I didn't type 8), I clicked on the Cool icon and it generates 8)

(I typed in : cool : without the spaces to generate the icon above, in order to explain!)

Cheers

That's what I understood Paul, and that's what I've fixed. However if your browser has been running since before the fix, you could be working with a cached copy of the "Post reply" page. You may need to reload the page (or possibly restart your browser) for the icon change to take effect.
