Title: Charlie Gillett (1942 -2010)
Post by Kevin Cryan on Today at 16:54
It's not been a very good year for those of us interested in popular music. Too many of those who made the popular idioms good, or who demonstrated what it was that made ok to be interested in them, are going to the grave, in some cases an all too early one.

With this thought in mind, I'm pretty sure that anybody who read, as I have,  at least once a year since its publication the 1970 book  The Sound of the City: The Rise of Rock & Roll (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sound-City-Rise-Rock-Roll/dp/0285633430),or listened appreciatively to some of the various broadcasts he did over the past forty or so years, will be saddened to learn that Charlie Gillett passed away. Gillett talked intelligently and passionately about rock and world music, and those of us who listened will now miss all that.

Here's another rock death with an admittedly slight Pete Atkin connection: I missed the gig (The Locarno, New Bristol Centre in 197? where our Hero was the support) thanks to a last-minute migraine. The migraine intensified  from gnashing my teeth all evening at home...

Help! This is fast becoming an obituary forum.  I'm begining to feel old. Perhaps we need a board for this type of thing. Next *oD in a geriatric ward.

Charlie also gets a mention in Gillian Reynolds' radio review column (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/7499423/Charlie-Gillett-a-gift-to-us-and-a-legacy-to-living-music-radio-review.html) in today's Daily Telegraph. Not only that, but so does Pete Atkin, with generous praise for his production of Frederic Raphael's "Final Demands". A pity then that Gillian's Atkin-Gillett link is built on a factual error.

Clive gave "The Glittering Prizes" a bit of a hatchet job in his TV critic days. The Wheel turns...
