Just heard about this in your newsletter Pete.
Absolutely shocking news.
You sound pretty philosophical and upbeat about the situation. I suppose it could have been so much worse........or worst!
Anyway, very best wishes for a continued recovery. Hope your instrument playing continues to improve.

I've listened to the album right through about 6 times now and IMHO it is right up there with the classic 70s material. The up-tempo numbers are ridiculously catchy, but what is remarkable is how Pete has sequenced the individual songs, bookended by the two versions of the title track and "Me to Thank" as a coda.
Very clever stuff.

3   Not Pete Atkin / Off-topic / Re: Last man standing in Wristwatch!  15.06.15 at 10:52
Yes, when I read of Ornette's death on Saturday, "Wristwatch......." sprang to mind and it was playing as an earworm in my head all weekend.
Great song!

Received my copy from Hillside already and it is quite wonderful.
IMO Pete and Clive's strongest release since The Road Of Silk, but maybe that's a reflection of the air of pervading sadness as I listen to what is likely the last big project collaboration from this pair of geniuses.
How on earth their music has eluded mainstream popularity is beyond me.
Anyway, for those of you still to obtain this delightful album.........enjoy!

Sorted!

And what a terrific setlist from last night.
Wish I'd been there - sounds like it was a great gig!

The Colours Of The Night available to pre-order on Amazon with scheduled release date given as 6th July.
Having said that, I plan to order direct from Hillside.

Link seems to be working Kevin.

Good article this week; I can endorse "George Martin: Living in the Material World."
Still available to watch on BBC i-Player.
I always thought George's solo output was by far the best of the Beatles' post split; the quality of the material on All Things Must Pass shows what was left off the band's albums presumably at the behest of Lennon and McCartney.
CJ seems to like him anyway.

Just read about this in the latest newsletter.
Terrible news.  Sad  Angry
Huge commiserations, Pete.
Hope something can be salvaged from the situation.
Maybe CJ could come up with some appropriate lyrics to add to a piece for the forthcoming album, although I could understand if neither have the heart for it.

 11   Pete Atkin / Newsletter / Re: July Newsletter  29.07.11 at 11:36
Excellent newsletter - thanks Pete.
Yay! Let's hear it for the compact disc; but I agree, if d/l is a more convenenient format for release, then so be it.
Particularly looking forward to The Way You Are With Me.
I recall with nostalgia listening with Ian Sorensen to his latest PA vinyl purchase whilst perusing the lyric sheet from the LP. Back in the 70s, one of the great joys in life was forking out one's hard-earned dosh in exchange for the latest release from the specialist record shop (how naff does that sound to today's yoof?!).  Roll Eyes

Recently updated my profile following a period of absence from MV  Embarassed
(Thanks again Steve for your help!)
Perusing  the site I came across the various YouTube clips.
The film accompanying the Hill of Little Shoes cover is harrowing - in fact, I found it very upsetting.
The caption at the end says it all; profoundly moving.

13   Pete Atkin / Words / Re:  CJ on QT  12.11.10 at 10:22
Hi everybody!

Don't know if this has been mentioned already.
Clive James was a guest panellist on BBC Question Time last night; predictably a voice of reason (not to mention humour) on a programme that I find becoming increasingly inane.
Meant to notify yesterday, but forgot (it's an age thing). Wink
Anyway, should be available to view online on BBC i-player.

Regards,

Douglas

I have it on good authority from someone who was told by a guy in the National Guard that if the students had broken free of the campus and rioted it would have only taken a phone call from the governor of Ohio for them to have started bombing!

Scary...............

Talking of interviews, does anybody know whether the one Pete and CJ did for Record Collector magazine (around a year ago?) ever made it to print?

Cheers,

Thought that my earlier post didn't look right!  Embarassed
Anyway...Enjoy!!

Hello and welcome!  (from a relative Fresher myself),

The track is "The Last Hill Which Shows You All The Valley" from Pete's album A King At Nightfall, which you can purchase via this site and which I would thoroughly recommend you do.

I have listened to the first two episodes and unless I missed something Pete's name has not been mentioned in the credits.  Angry
Perhaps they're leaving it till the last episode.

 20   Pete Atkin / News / Re: Atkin/James re-releases on Demon Records  22.05.09 at 15:44
Steve,

After following your link to the NetRhythms review, I noticed it referred to a sample from The Pearl Driller on Lemon Jelly's  "Nice Weather for Ducks".
I have that  cd single!  Never noted the connection before, so after digging it out, I found it is indeed there - a guitar motif.
No credit given to Pete on the sleeve, however  Angry

Cheers,

Hi,

Thanks Steve for the reassurance on the correct pronunciation of Pete's surname.
I was pretty sure I had it right.
How anyone would say it otherwise beats me.
I do recall Terry Wogan once joke that there was a West Indian player in the Scotland rugby squad (Jim Aitken - geddit!)

Thanks also for the Uncut review.

Meant to mention what a great song Canoe is. Heard it first on Live in Australia and consider it as good as anything Pete & Clive have come up with. The studio version is, if anything, even better imo.  Colin Tully and I used to be pals at primary school (many, many moons ago).

Sorry to be Mr Inquisitive again, but I missed the beginning of Clive's appearance on BBC 1's The One Show the other day. Wondered if he mentioned the re-releases. I think he was on mainly to promote his live shows.
Iirc, last time he appeared on the same show he gave the Midnight Voices album a plug.

Cheers,

Douglas

 22   Pete Atkin / News / Re: Atkin/James re-releases on Demon Records  12.05.09 at 16:28
Hello all,

This is my first mail since I joined.
Firstly may I say what a pleasure it is to be among the MVs.

Regards the recent reviews of the re-releases, in the June issue of MOJO, it states Pete Atkin (pronounced Ate-kin).
Is it just me?
I always thought  Pete's surname was pronounced phonetically as it is spelt.
I'm sure I've heard CJ say thus and in announcements following Pete's radio productions, although I gather it is sometimes mistakenly spelt as Atkins.
Perhaps some kind soul would reassure me that I have not been mispronouncing the great man's name for the past quarter of a century.
That aside, it is a favourable review, apart from dismissing Live Libel - forshame!
I believe there has been one in Uncut magazine. If so I missed it. Has anyone posted a scan?

The re-releases are terrific imho and fantastic value considering the quality, bonus tracks, liner notes and archive photographs.
I have also purchased other albums from Hillside Music. The Lakeside Sessions and Live in Australia are a snip at £9 each for a double cd and the service is impeccable. I received one order within 24 hours and I live on an island on the west of Scotland.

Cheers,

Douglas

I see on the link to the Edsel reissue of AKAN/TROS on the Smash Flops homepage that there is (/was?) to be an article in Record Collector re the reissues.
Does anybody know which issue of the magazine this refers to?

 24   Pete Atkin / Members / Re: New members  07.03.09 at 12:05
My name is Douglas..............I'm a Pete Atkin fan

What brings me here?

I have been aware of MV for some time, but decided to sign up when I learnt  (by chance) of the recent re-issues.

How did I first encounter Pete's music?

Through an old friend - Ian Sorensen  (Hi Ian!)

What made me stay faithful through the wilderness years?

When my vinyl collection went the way of most vinyl, Pete's LPs were some of the very few I transferred to cassette tape.

What's my favourite Atkin song?

So many to choose from. I could pick anything from DTMA or the original Side One of AKAN.
I'll go for Carnations On The Roof.

Why?

The track that's been in my head since trying to obtain a cd copy.
The macabre humour, Pete's vocal delivery and a cracking tune - quasi motown backbeat and an inspired string arrangement over the chorus.

Where would I like MV to go?

Just keep on what you're doing.
Terrific stuff!
