Aha, Cary!  I was literally just about to post the news of this.   Clive and I recorded our bits last week but I only just now found out when they're broadcasting them.   The deal is that every day from Mon-Fri we each choose a track and talk about it with the admirable Ken and each other.  The spot goes out each day at around 1130GMT.  I think it was pretty good fun.  It was enjoyable in any case to talk about other people's stuff (well, mostly).  I won't spoil it by giving away our choices.  I have no idea if Ken will play any of our stuff at any point, but we did get in some mentions of the business at hand.

sneakily ... methinks that Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick gets more than a mention from Clive!!

Hmm, do I catch the faint whiff of a potential competition here?  Clive and Pete, five Radio 2-friendly choices each...?  Far be it from me, etc., etc.

Was that Orbison's 1987 re-recording of "In Dreams"? Ouch! -- surely Clive was (like the rest of us?) expecting the 1963 version...

There goes the competition!   Unless you want to guess the five tracks each we chose but which the producer rejected...   (We gave them a list of ten each and they picked the five each they wanted to use.)

Well we can only go on past stated preferences but I would have expected something by Ella Fitzgerald/Ellington/Rodgers and Hart and perhaps, as mentioned, Buddy Holly.

Other than that? For a Radio 2 audience in the middle of the morning?
Mamas and the Papas?
Loving Spoonful?
Robert Johnson?
Could be anything really! Anyone else care to hazard a guess?

Beatles?
Beach Boys?
Barenaked Ladies?

Only one of those six artists is on the list of ten...

If the one is Pete's, my money is on BNL, if Clive's then Beach Boys.  No idea about the remaining 9 though!

Dylan?
Newman?

No, none of those either!  (I don't think Robert Johnson would come under the 'Radio 2-friendly' banner anyway!)

OK, these are the tracks that were on our lists for the ken Bruce show but which weren't chosen by the producer.  Do bear in mind that these are not meant to be Desert Island Discs-type all-time-favourite choices, just stuff we like which might be Radio-2-friendly and which we'd happily natter about.

CLIVE
Mamas and Papas: Creeque Alley
Eagles: New Kid in Town
Kate Bush: Wuthering Heights
Jefferson Airplane: Somebody to Love
The Band: Whispering Pines

PETE
The Roches: Mr Sellack
Richard & Linda Thompson: I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight
Trisha Yearwood: A Lover Is For Ever
Chip Taylor: (I Want) The Real Thing
Elvis Presley: Trying To Get To You

Interesting selection! I'd go along with every one of Clive's choices.

I'm intrigued by Pete's choice of I want to see the Bright Lights tonight from the eponymous album. Personally I think there are better - as in more evocative - tracks on that album, especially Does He have a Friend for Me. or, if you prefer something more upbeat but subversive, The Little Beggar Girl. But then I preferred Linda's voice to Richard's, although his song-writing and skills and musicianship are awesome.

There's a thread on the Radio 2 'Folk & Acoustic' message board linked to Clive & Pete's 'Tracks of my Years' slot

As far as I can see, on the "Music played" lists, Ken Bruce didn't play any tracks from the new CD's and the only Atkin/James was the Julie Covington track  :'(

I have tried to imagine what the alternative programmes might have sounded like by collecting most of the tracks here (http://kcryan.wordpress.com/2009/02/28/clive-james-pete-atkin-tracks-of-my-years/)

I know Clive's a fan but I can't believe this could have inspired one of our favourites.
