Title: Newbie
Post by Anne H on Today at 22:01
Having joined this group recently, and done a bit of lurking, I thought I should introduce myself!  I first encountered Pete/Clive/Julie’s music at age 17 in January 1970, when Kenny Everett played various tracks, and eventually I acquired three of the original LPs (BOTBS, DTMA and The Beautiful Changes).  Then always promised to get myself a copy of “A King At Nightfall” but never did, and decades went by, during which all of my record collection unfortunately went by the board.  Recently though I have been attempting to recoup my old collection as well as filling in the gaps, and succeeded in finding all of the above although AKAN, ROS, SD & LL are all on vinyl albums.  (Nice - indeed very nice, but can’t be played in the kitchen!)  Also found the “Live in Australia”, “Lakeside Sessions” and “Midnight Voices” CDs on Ebay and not knowing then about the shop on this website, paid FAR too much for them :o(  but heck, they were well worth it.  Have also been re-reading/reading Clive’s memoirs.  I have not read all the previous messages here yet (quite a lot to get through) but can see how big a part Midnight Voices has played in the comeback of Pete and Clive as a songwriting partnership and would like to say a big thank-you to Steve!

My current favourites on the new CDs are “Canoe” “Eye of the Universe” and “Early Days”.  I would LOVE to hear Julie Covington sing “Early Days” – to me it sounds just tailor-made for her (maybe because it reminds me a bit of “Don’t Bother Me Now”).  Has she ever performed this number?

Another question to all you seasoned Midnight Voicers, who actually WAS the poet who said “How beautiful they are, the trains you miss”?

Anne

If I remember the dim and distant past, pre-forum, in another era; it was some French dude.

I have never been a fan of French dudes, only of French women   ;)

Thanks BogusTrumper.  It's Laforgue!  Your hint and a bit of Googling did the trick.

Welcome back Midnight Voices!

"Oh, qu'ils sont pittoresques, les trains manqués!"

By the way, Bogus, did you just get more rain? We had 13+ inches here a couple of weeks ago. I-94 closed between Madison and Milwaukee.

Hello Anne

Now if, at age 17, you'd been living in the London area, and in the unlikely event you'd found nothing better to do late evenings than watch the box, you might just have tuned in to a light musical entertainment called The Party's Moving On (http://www.peteatkin.com/tpmo.htm), on London Weekend. All seems highly improbable. But if, stretching the hypothesis beyond breaking point, you'd caught the third week's show, then you would have seen and heard the lovely Miss C singing "Early Days", accompanied by Laurie Holloway's trio and perhaps also by Pete Atkin.

Unfortunately, a video recording of only one programme in the series survives, and it isn't that one...

Steve

Yup.  But the worst is over, and we needed to redesign our HQ anyway  :D

And the post flood control is set at 300 seconds!!

Thanks, Steve.  No - unfortunately I've never lived in or near London, then or now - so would never have seen the show.  What a terrible waste that the whole series has not been preserved! :(
