Seven authors are in contention for the Orwell Prize for books, after the judges were forced to extend the shortlist.

Nick Cohen's What's Left?, Jay Griffiths' Wild, William Hague's William Wilberforce, Ed Husain's The Islamist, Marina Lewycka's Two Caravans, Raja Shehadeh's Palestinian Walks and Clive Stafford Smith's Bad Men all made it onto the list, when the judges decided to opt for seven books instead of the usual six, because the "range and intensity of the writing made it so difficult to choose".

At a debate yesterday evening (26th March), the judges also revealed the shortlist for the award's journalism category, with journalists coming from the Independent, the Observer, the Daily Telegraph, the Economist and the BBC, including cultural commentator Clive James.

Chair of judges, Jean Seaton, said: "Watching the judges select a shortlist from the longlist was painful: anybody who thinks that political thought is weary should pick up one of the books from the longlist or browse some of the journalism."

The winners will be announced at the Foreign Press Association on 24th April.

Johann Hari has been a twice-weekly columnist for The Independent since January 2003, and a Contributing Editor to Attitude (Britain's main gay magazine). Since 2005 he has also written a weekly 'City Lives' column for the Evening Standard, London's nightly newspaper.

Clive seems to have won too (though this isn't mentioned on the Orwell Prize site). The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/apr/25/pressandpublishing) has:

Actually, it is mentioned. It's just that the the special award was posted (http://www.theorwellprize.co.uk/the-award/specialawards.aspx) after I'd stopped monitoring the site.

Clive James was awarded a Special Prize for Writing and Broadcasting after being shortlisted for the Journalism Prize 2008.

He has been a staple of British screens, airwaves and publications since the early 1970s. A writer, poet, essayist, broadcaster and commentator, he has written for the Listener, the New Statesman, the Review, The Observer, The Guardian, the LRB, the Spectator and the Times Literary Supplement. He has presented (and created) television programmes including Fame in the 20th Century, Clive James’ Postcard from... and Clive James on Television. He was shortlisted for this year’s Orwell Prize for Journalism for three editions of A Point of View on BBC Radio 4.

Now that journalist Johann Hari is handing back his 2008 Orwell prize (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/sep/14/johann-hari-apologises-orwell-prize), one wonders whether or not it will be passed on to another nominee of that year. If it is, then it's very unlikely that Clive James will be the in the running. The fact that he was given a "special" prize would, I imagine, rule him out.
