Sorry if this has been asked many times before but are the out of press cd's available as mp3 for download. I have several cassettes from when I was at UNI but they are basically worn out.

Cheers

Well from the lack of replies and fruistless searching on google it looks like the short answer is no.

I have also tried to purchase C D's advertised on amazon.com but despite the huge pricetags the supplier was out of stock.

Is there no way to obtain the music from Live libel etc ??

I have noticed references to rights to the material etc does this mean that some company or entity is blocking the release of the tracks and does this apply to the recording or to the songs i.e. can the songs not be rereleased (rerecorded)

ANy helpful suggestions appreciated

Hello Ashley

The short answer is unfortunately the right one. There's no physical reason we can't just upload the entire catalogue in MP3 format, but there are several good legal reasons not to do it. And yes, they're pretty much all to do with copyright, not just Pete's and Clive's on the songs and the words (which they wouldn't in any case wish to place in the public domain: it could be argued that the availability of lyrics and chords on Smash Flops already prejudices their rights, but this risk they are kind enough (to us, the fans) to take), but also those of various entities in the performances and the recordings.

Pete has explained parts of this complex web (involving Essex Music and its successors, and not least one Radio Corporation of America and its), once or twice in MV history. In due course I hope that he will (or I shall) attempt to draw all the disparate pieces together for everyone's reference and place them in the (currently empty) "Atkin FAQ" on this forum.

Until then, you might like to read his exposition in the MV archives: follow this link (http://www.peteatkin.com/mv/mvdigyr7.php) to the text version of MV's 7th year, and scroll down to message MV10644. It's quite long but I think it's a clear explanation of the situation.

Of course none of us have given up on the prospect of a future full re-reissue, either by Pete himself through Hillside, should he ever penetrate all the barriers, or by some other means such as the record companies opening their vaults to on-line MP3 sales (with all the DRM hassles attached, no doubt). Until then, the lucky ones can be thankful they were here (with MV) at the right time (our middle period) to grab the treasures on CD; those less fortunate can only search out the ever-rarer resales of the CDs (or the vinyl that's still around), but be thankful that Pete is still able and willing to play the songs for us live, and even to come up with new ones, year after year.

Thanks for the reply I guess I will just have to continue looking for the CD's via ebay etc. I personally would like to get the songs and if they are re-recorded so be it.

Living in switzerland its quite hard to get the time to see Pete live but as the family gets older maybe I'll get a weekend pass.

Should anyone want to sell the cds please send me a PM

There have been three copies of the Secret Drinker/Live Libel CD on Ebay in the last three months at prices between £5 and £12.50 as well as a set of 5 CDs which went for just over £50 (but I can't remember which ones they were).

Sometimes there are copies of the CDs on Netsounds www.netsounds.com although at the moment there is just a very dubious offer from an American source to copy them for £40 to £50 each but  "The seller will have to back order this item from their suppliers".

Incidentally there is a vinyl copy of BOTBS on sale on Netsounds for £104! I don't wish to appear disloyal but that does seem to be a bit high.

www.gemm.com has a fair bit of stuff - it is a searchable site which gathers from listings from a large number of international second-hand dealers. You purchase via them from the individual dealer - much as you do through amazon.   At the moment the PA listing is largely vinyl - but includes a copy of Secret Drinker / Live Libel for about 28 US dollars.  In my experience the advertised stock rotates reasonably well so it is worth checking back if they haven't got what you want (or if the price is too high).  Musicstack.com is similar - but not quite so good in my (limited) experience.  Good Luck!

Winter Spring is of course best obtained from the Hillside Music (http://www.peteatkin.com/hillshop.htm) online shop, as are The Lakeside Sessions and the Australian tour CD. If you drop a line to the Hillside Music email address concurrently with your order, Pete will autograph your copy!
