Sheet Music !

I'm delighted to report that Pete has begun the process, trailered elsewhere I think, of generating 'lead sheet' versions of his songs in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format. These are the abbreviated form of the score sheet: just the melody line, lyrics and chord symbols -- not as comprehensive as the 'First Folio' transcriptions, but enough to let the buskers among us play a recognisable interpretation, with the right chords.

Here are the first six. Over the next day or so I'll add the links to the discography, but in case you can't wait, these are the direct links:

     Cottonmouth
     Femme Fatale
I Wouldn't Hear A Word Against The Spring
     The Party's Moving On
     Perfect Moments
What Am I Supposed To Do?

Pete is open (no promises though) to requests for the next batch. And of course any errors, omissions or just comments, please post here.

Steve

Many a thank yet again, Steve, for making the space and uploading these.   I'm sure it doesn't make us unique, but I'm always a bit surprised that more people don't make lead sheets available.  They're at least as good a way as downloads of spreading songs around in something like an authorised form.  They're a lot less approximate than lyrics and chords or guitar tabs -- of which there are loads online that are incomplete or inaccurate or misleading or all three -- and I hope they'll be more helpful even for those who don't pick up on the nuances of the melody lines.

I've tried not to over-do the nuancing, i.e. not to attempt to transcribe every last detail of my own phrasing except where I think it matters, usually in terms of how to make the lyric work best.  Nearly always it's best to reduce the melody to its essence, down to the point from which others can take off.

The software I'm using is PrintMusic! from Finale, which is a bit of a cheap-and-cheerful compromise when set against industry standard software like Sibelius, but for my purposes I think it does the job.   Some aspects of it are a bit fiddly and there are some things it just can't do but, as Steve says, I'm open to suggestions, and errors can be corrected pretty easily (I make the changes in my PM! version and send Steve a replacement PDF).   Do send notice of errors to me in an IM, unless of course you'd like to score a point or two (!)

I did talk about this idea ages and ages ago, but I'm blowed if I can find where in the Forum that was, so if anyone has any particular requests (I think some did) do please post them again (this thread would be a good place).

At the moment I'm holding off making available any of the songs from my first three albums and Julie's album as they're all under publishers' agreements and I do need formal permission.  I don't expect the publishers to object - it is doing their job for them, after all - but better safe than sorry.

Hope you'll be able to make something of 'em.

The old requests are here. (Not sure how you get the focus to the top of the message list!)

Thanks, Jan.  I did try!  I'll put those at the top of the list.  (I have already done one or two of them - just waiting for the publishers' wink to be tipped.)

Just as with a WP program, I find that the more I use it, the more I figure out how to do, so later additions to the catalogue may look a bit better than earlier ones.

Thanks for finding that, Jan. To make the link point to the first message, go up a level to the Thread index, right click the desired thread title and select 'copy link address' ('copy shortcut' in MSIE). Paste this into your post.

Or, change the start ID on the end of the link you have (';start=5#1') to point to the first message (';start=0#0').
Or just delete the ';start=n#n' part altogether and the link will take you to the first message in the thread. So:

http://www.peteatkin.com/cgi-bin/mv/YaBB.cgi?board=newsletter;action=display;num=1118165677;start=5#1

becomes

http://www.peteatkin.com/cgi-bin/mv/YaBB.cgi?board=newsletter;action=display;num=1118165677

Steve

PS: There's no space in the actual url -- the apparent one after 'num' above is YaBB's 80-character forced display break at work, see the Forum FAQ.

Top of my list would be A Man Who's Been Around which I've tried to transcribe but there's one chord change (there always is in Pete's songs) which resists transcription.

Ian, which change is that?  Come on, I like a challenge!

Yes! Fantastic! For me this is the key moment of the song from a musical point of view but I'd never been able to figure it out while scratching away on my guitar. Thanks for the info, Pete. Next time, try to be more conventional... Wink

I havent been here for a few weeks - what an excellent surprise!
Thanks very much Pete. I have perhaps unwisely succombed to the temptation of buying an electric guitar recently. So: something to practice.
