I got lucky when I was young.  Someone dragged me to see BB King, working on the theory there were certain people I should see whether I liked them or not.  I an now very glad I went.
 
There have been some very good US TV programs from the lesser known channels on the Blues.  If you get a chance to see "Mississippi Jukes", try and see it.

yes, it was Jimmy Cliff (and the reggae brought Bob Marley to mind as absent in the polls, hence the relevance, sort off).

 
Interesting given the origins of popular music that in fact Miles Davis is the only black artist from any genre in the MV's top 30!
