Aha!  Back at the Pheasantry - hooray!  Once again with Simon Wallace, natch.    I'd have liked a slightly earlier one, of course, but we haven't been able to organise a date that works for all of us, but never mind.   This one's not yet in their listing, I think, but it is inked in.,  And hey, it's a Saturday this time.

Hey there,

I'm mighty keen to get tickets for June 1st at the pleasant Pheasantry as it will be my first time seeing you live and my 11 yr old is desperate to join me. I don't want to miss out so are you or anyone able to day when these will go on sale, as the venue is not revealing it.

Thanks so much!

I'll do my best, but the Pheasantry system has its own momentum.  The best thing is to keep checking.

At last! I'm pleased to report that Pizza Express's The Pheasantry venue opened booking today for the Saturday June 1st appearance by Pete, with Simon Wallace.

My 12 year old is beside himself with excitement. He's been listening to Mr Atkin since he was a tiny pup. Hoping for some classics.

I'm a "little" older Smiley but also have my ticket and am looking forward to it. Always a good atmosphere there and the sound is good too.

Another excellent night at the Pheasantry in the company of Pete Atkin and Simon Wallace. It is so good to hear these two performing – and in a respectful venue with great sound.

Pete and Simon started the first set, not (as they have done a few times) with the portentous promise of the Master of the Revels, but with one of Pete and Clive’s low-key songs; Sunrise.  Of course the thing about Pete and Clive’s songs is that often the low-key numbers are at least as impressive as the show-stoppers – and so it proved – they gave a lovely sensitive delivery to the song to start the show.

And so it continued.  Pete was on great form, his voice and playing both strong and clear.  Simon’s accompaniment was, as always, a delight.  He gives Pete room to breathe and gives the songs time to unfold.  In fact the over-arching impression of the night was how the combined experience of these two performers resulted in songs being given the perfect pacing to develop in front of our eyes.  In many cases that means the songs are slightly slowed down from their recorded versions – but the set was by no means all slow – we had a rousing version of I’ve Got Better Things To Do, with Pete snarling “Have a Cigar!”. Prayers Against the Hitman was sung with some feeling too ; let’s have some protection against the destroyers!

But maybe it was a night when the slower songs were even more in their element. Simon gave Senior Citizens a lovely curling piano intro which set it up perfectly. There was a rare performance of Secret Drinker, in celebration Pete said of its recent broadcast on the Private Passions radio show.  Pete played a couple of songs himself on piano, while Simon took a break, and included an excerpt from an unnamed work in progress - tune only, no lyrics yet. He said that now Clive is no longer writing lyrics he will have to write some himself.  It was great to hear that we can still look forward to more songs, even if they are some way yet from being ready to release.

A highlight of the night for me was You Better Face It Boy. Introducing it Pete said that he had always played it in too jaunty a way in the early days.  Now it has become distinctly slower and has gained a weighted feel which really brings out the end-of-the-show mood.  Simon’s piano notes tumbled almost wearily into a solo before the vocal reprise and the final lyrical punch of not being “the big draw anymore”.  The whole performance was perfect.  I found myself thinking ‘now if they had recorded that it wouldn’t need any work at all before it went on the (surely forthcoming) “Live at the Pheasantry!” album!

Thanks indeed to Pete and Simon for another great evening – and to the Pheasantry for such good sound and treatment.   Here’s looking forward to the next one!

Pete also dedicated Girl on the Train to two youngsters (sorry I should have written their names down!) in the audience who were sat with their family not far from the stage. It was lovely to hear their genuine whoops and sounds of excitement.  They got to have a chat with Pete afterwards  Smiley

Hi well it's not quite as easy as facebook:
First resize your photo. Make it no larger than 1000 pixels longest side.
Then it has to be hosted on another website. People used to use photobucket but I believe they have ceased - I think flickr would do and they give free space.
Then in your draft post here you click on the little photo/picture icon at the top which inserts two sets of with img written in them like this [img][/img]  Insert the URL of your photo in-between these two - and then check the preview button at the bottom of your draft post to see if it is working.
it takes a minute or two - but is quite satisfying Smiley
I hope my fairly-non-technical explanation is clear enough.
Credit due to Alexis Birkill who helped me.  Smiley

Hi Seán

What a wonderful review and photos! Thank you very much!   Smiley

I think you may be off on your travels soon? I will sit at the edge of Howe Sound, hand over eyes, wiggling my toes in the water, watching for the column of smoke that heralds the arrival of you and Mary!  Wink

Have a great summer!

Thanks so much Seán - yes I remember uploading images this way some time back! Will try to get some of my concert pics up here - took a far few although not as high res as yours. I'll figure it out.

The concert was a real thrill for me and my son. I'm not sure I can be classed as a youngster at 45 but it was me and my 12 year old who Pete mentioned and my boy left with such a warm glow it was crazy. He's been listening to Pete for years and couldn't believe how lucky he was to sit so close, hear his favourites and meet Pete at the end.

We both loved every minute. Even my other half enjoyed thoroughly having only heard one or two songs before (despite feeling a bit like a gooseberry between my son and I being complete fanboys).

Clearly there's a requirement for making the task of uploading users' images as easy here as it is on Facebook. I'm looking into adding this functionality to MV, and will announce it in the 'Tech' board when it's ready.

Thank you very much Sean for your mouth-watering review. So gratifying to learn about that special gig, and the promise of new delights in the offing.
And for the photos. The close-up of Pete well deserves its promotion to the cover of the site.

Correction to my notes above - that wasn't Senior Citizens which Simon began with a lovely curling piano intro - I have a fairly clear memory of Pete starting that one alone on guitar. So ... it was something else... Sorry. Never mind you get the general flavour.  Smiley
