Yup, they've asked me back again!  It must be something to do with how you've turned out in your throngingnesses to fill the place up the last three times.  It's a treat for me, so I hope that between us we can keep up this enviable tradition.  It will be me and that nice Mr Wallace once again, with the help of what I understand is a new piano!   It may not be on the Pheasantry website quite yet, but it will be there soon, so keep checking.   Right - I'm starting to work on the setlist already.

Ah, no, it seems I didn't.  Something else happened.  But I'm sure you can find it OK.

Thanks for announcing this, Pete. I think this link should take us straight to the booking page. I'll update the Gig Guide accordingly.

(Background: for reasons best known to itself, the Forum has a habit of inserting soft line breaks when a long url is displayed, which appear as spaces and so look like typos, but they don't corrupt the actual address or prevent it working).

Steve

Correction 2nd Dec : I looked further into this and discovered that the Forum had truncated the actual URL at the 'space' (after 80 characters), not just the displayed one. This is now similar to Facebook's treatment of long URLs (which won't do!) It may be another effect of the server upgrade mentioned here. So Pete's action was correct but the Forum screwed up. I'll see if I can fix it.

SJB

(Later) Should be OK now -- sorry about that.

Lovely evening at The Pheasantry (it was Pete's 4th visit, but somehow only my first). I shared a table with Seán, and we had a good chat.

Simon Wallace did sterling service on the piano, and it was good to hear Pete released from having to pay and sing.

The venue is surprisingly good - it seems just to be a square box with lots of hard edges, but it somehow works very well.

Well there was a real rarity in that setlist!

I haven't looked at the gig setlist for a few years but I'm sure this song isn't on it. One of Julie Covington's from "The party's moving on" (1969)
Sorry to have missed it, and all the rest of the gig  Sad

Pete about to sign a particularly historic piece of Atkin/James memorabilia at the start of the second set.

Thanks for the post and setlist Simon.  As the setlist shows, early in the evening Pete played An Apparition in Las Vegas which he said was about Elvis in his ‘’second great period’.  Except of course he pointed out the song is not about Elvis, it is about the audience, the ladies with pink rinses.  For the rest of the night I kept seeing Pete as Elvis and all of us in the audience as the ladies with pink rinses.  Well perhaps!  But then Pete is also definitely in his second great period.  The way he re-guns songs like “What Am I Supposed To Do” and “You Better Face It Boy” is remarkable.  Slowing them down and giving the lyrics time to breathe has the effect, for me at least, of allowing them to fill with more meaning and feeling than ever.  This must also have to do with the remarkable Simon Wallace on piano.  Simon is a dream of an accompanist knowing just when to stand back or move forward for a solo but who also is clearly a naturally talented song-arranger [as well of course as being a song-writer himself].  Working together they reshape the songs. As Simon Reap points out Mr Wallace allows Pete the space to focus on his singing.  The results are remarkable.  I went off dreaming that they might be busy on a complete re-recording of the whole Atkin/ James songbook – I wish!  Anyway thankyou Mr Wallace and Mr Atkin for a great gig – another great gig!  Thanks also to Simon Reap for the company – we must have been visibly getting on well as the waitress brought us a combined bill  Smiley

Does anyone know more about 'What the Papers Say'? And no, I don't mean the classic Granada TV weekly review of the press, hosted by Brian Inglis, which we remember fondly from our youth; rather the one with Pete Atkin and Clive James, illustrated in Seán's post of yesterday.

Multiple thankyous to everyone who was at the Pheasantry for all of your indulgence and generosity, not least for filling it once again (the fourth time, now) and thereby maintaining my hopes of getting booked back - that is how it works!   And yes, it's not hard to spot, I think, what a huge contribution Simon Wallace makes to the proceedings, not least directly for me, so thank you also on his behalf.

Oh, and that leaflet with 'What The Papers Say' on it, Steve:   that was a real surprise.   It was a sort of general promo handout thing for me and Clive that was done in 1969, well before any recordings or solo career were even thought about (for me, anyway).   It was instigated by the guy who signed up the three of us (me, Clive, and Julie) as our manager at the time.   It would be unfair to say that he was the original of the Practical Man, but I think it's fair to say that he didn't have what might have turned out to be the right idea.   Anyway, it's a collector's item, that leaflet.  The only two items under the 'What The Papers Say' heading were from reviews of the Cambridge Footlights.

That was the one I had to search hardest for (couple of others needed checking to make sure I'd got the title right, but that was a complete mystery!)

On an unrelated note, as we were leaving at the end of the gig a lady came up to me to ask whether I was Pete's brother (I was sitting so close to Pete that she'd spent the evening comparing and contrasting us!)

Lead sheet here, and new one (just come through -- note subtle change of title) here; or try this if you're logged in.
